UAE School Days: Are Kids Overburdened?

Too Long School Days? More UAE Parents Worry About Children’s Exhaustion
In the United Arab Emirates, the impacts of long school days on children are drawing increasing attention. The subject gained new momentum after a well-known local businessman expressed concerns on social media about the current educational schedule, which he believes is excessively demanding for students – especially the younger ones.
An Everyday Struggle with Early Rising
Many parents face the daily challenge of waking their children as early as 5:30 AM so they can catch the school bus and head to the institution. Often, children only return home around 3 PM, exhausted with low energy levels. Following this are homework, dinner, and sleep – leaving almost no time for leisure or family togetherness.
The situation is worsened by the fact that in many families, school-age children of different ages have varying timetables and return home at different times, leading to logistical challenges and family tensions. Some parents feel the education system demands too much from students, paying little attention to the children's mental and physical well-being.
The Youngest Suffer the Most
Reports suggest that it’s the smallest children who suffer most from the current system. Preschool and lower primary school children wake up just like teenagers – before 6 AM – and also endure long school days. By the end of the day, they are tired, have lost their appetites, and are unable to concentrate, not to mention having practically no time for play or rest.
Parents Urge for Change
Parents voicing their concerns on social media agree that the current length of school days is unsustainable. Many suggest shortening the school days or at least starting them later. Others emphasize that by building more local schools, children’s travel times could be reduced, thereby contributing to reducing their exhaustion.
An increasing number of families are considering not sending their children to school on Fridays, so they can rest, participate in prayer times, or simply spend time with the family.
Recommended for Decision-Makers’ Attention
The suggestion has reached Dubai’s educational authorities as well as the federal Ministry of Education, who have the opportunity to reassess the entire system. The goal is not only to maintain the quality of education but also to ensure the health and happiness of the children. There is a need for balance between learning and life – a sentiment agreed upon by the parents.
Summary
In the UAE, a growing societal dialogue demands the revision of school schedules. Parents wish for their children to attend school not in exhaustion, but with motivation and health. The call for change is clear: shorter school days, local schools, more leisure time, and a more human-centered education system – all for the future of their children.
