Unique Initiative: Dubai Students 'Shop for Free'

Unique Ramadan Initiative Where Students 'Shop for Free'
The holy month of Ramadan is not only about fasting and prayers but also a time of giving and community cohesion. Dubai blends these values with a special initiative that involves hundreds of students. The 'Gift It Forward' program, now in its second year, provides an opportunity for underprivileged students not only to receive gifts but to choose those that best meet their needs.
What is 'Gift It Forward'?
'Gift It Forward' is an initiative launched by Dubai Holding aimed at helping families and students in need during Ramadan. The program is not just a traditional charity drive; it allows participants to choose products they need the most. This turns the gift giving into an experience that is not only supportive but dignified and empowering.
Through the program, students from the National Charity School, many from low-income families, were able to select clothes, shoes, school supplies, toys, and other useful items. The students had the option to pick gifts for their loved ones too, making the experience even more special.
How does the program work?
Dubai Holding set up markets or mini-bazaars in buildings designated for boys and girls of the National Charity School. At these markets, students could choose from a variety of donated products provided by 25 companies. Products ranged from clothes, accessories, personal care items, household goods, toys, and school supplies. Each student could select up to 10 new items to take home.
Prominent brands participating include Jumeirah, Dubai Parks and Resorts, Azadea Group, L’Occitane en Provence, Virgin Megastore, Apparel Group, Alshaya Group, and The Giving Movement. This year, the event was held in a school for the first time, bringing the aid closer to those who need it most.
Impact and Goals of the Program
'Gift It Forward' provides not only material help but also empowers students by giving them the opportunity to actively shape their own lives. The program helps young people become decision-makers rather than passive recipients, boosting their confidence and dignity.
This year, the program has been expanded and will be held at multiple locations in Dubai during Ramadan. The target audience includes single mothers, low-income families, and workers. Organizers have collected over 200,000 new products from partners, with more than 500 volunteers assisting in the program's execution. The event plans to aid over 11,000 residents in Dubai this year.
Student Experiences
For the students, the program is not just about material support but also a memorable and joyful experience. One 10th grader originally from Egypt expressed excitement over finding a colorful shirt and skirt for his sister. Other students picked not only clothes but also pens and other useful items for their siblings, adding to the familial experience.
Looking Ahead
The 'Gift It Forward' program extends help beyond Ramadan, contributing to long-term community strengthening. Dubai Holding aims to promote a culture of volunteerism and contribute to a future where giving and helping are natural parts of social life.
The success of the program is illustrated by last year's edition, where approximately 120,000 products were distributed, valued at millions of dirhams. This year, the goal is even bigger: more products, more volunteers, and more help offered. 'Gift It Forward' is not only material aid but a message of strength and hope for those in need.
Initiatives like this, imbued with the spirit of Ramadan, remind us that giving and cohesion are important not just during special occasions but every day. In Dubai, this program is yet another example of how community responsibility and assistance can be achieved in a creative and effective way.
