UAE Education: Tech Transforms 20-Year Journey

UAE Schools in 20 Years: Tripled Fees, iPads Replace Heavy Bags
The educational system in the United Arab Emirates has undergone spectacular development over the past two decades. These changes are noticeable not only in infrastructure, digital technology, or educational methods but also in everyday life—especially affecting parents' wallets. While tuition fees and school supplies were once affordable, a school year's cost can now easily reach or exceed 10,000–15,000 dirhams per child—even in the more affordable schools.
Costs Multiplied in a Generation
In the early 2000s, educating children did not pose a significant burden for many families. Back then, the tuition for an entire year was around 6,000–7,000 dirhams, which even included computer lessons. Bus costs were 180 dirhams a month, and the price of textbooks and stationery barely reached 200 dirhams a year.
However, today just the tuition at the same school exceeds 16,000 dirhams annually, and the bus fee can reach 10,000 dirhams. This means that the cost of education for an average family has tripled or even quadrupled over the past two decades—all while expectations and lifestyles have significantly changed along with inflation.
Technology Everywhere: Mandatory Laptops and iPads
In the old days, classrooms were dominated by blackboards, chalk, and hand-copied notes. The computer room was a rare and special place that students visited at most once or twice a month—if the computers even worked.
In contrast, education today is almost entirely based on digital foundations. iPads or laptops are nearly compulsory for learning, even in lower grades. Classes are aided by smart boards, projectors, and interactive materials. Homework submission, parent notifications, and even tracking school bus movements are all done through mobile apps.
The New 'Extras' of School Life
Beyond essential learning tools, the price of accessories has also dramatically increased. Trendy, branded water bottles, smart backpacks, digital notebooks, and other trendy gear have appeared on the back-to-school shopping list. A simple pencil case or ruler is no longer sufficient; many schools provide detailed lists of specific brands of stationery that must be purchased. A child's school supplies for the first day of school can easily exceed 1,500 dirhams.
School cafeterias have also undergone a complete transformation. Instead of pizzas and sodas available for 1–2 dirhams in the past, kids now spend 10–15 dirhams daily on meals, adding several hundred dirhams in monthly extra costs.
Infrastructure: From Desert Dust to International-level Sport Fields
Gone are the simple playgrounds and sandy sports fields; today, most schools boast modern, internationally standard sports facilities: football fields, basketball courts, cricket fields, swimming pools, and gyms have become almost essential for institutions seeking competitive edges.
School buses have also undergone huge advancements. Old, non-air-conditioned vehicles have been replaced by modern, air-conditioned buses equipped with GPS tracking. Parents receive mobile notifications if the bus is delayed and know exactly where their child is.
New Values and Expectations: Selfies and Social Media
A child's first day of school is no longer just about meeting new teachers—it is much more about how they appear on social media. Instagram posts, TikTok videos, and 'first day of school' updates have replaced the excitement of unknown classmates. Social pressures and digital presence have elevated the start of the school year to a new level.
Have the Old Values Been Lost?
Parents who grew up in the UAE education system themselves often nostalgically remember simpler times. Back then, learning was based on hand-written notes, simple tools, and communal experiences. Siblings used each other's books and schoolbags, brought lunch from home, and 'back to school' didn’t mean a shopping spree.
Today, education also represents an entire lifestyle: fashion, technology, social media, digital platforms, and continuous expenses. The question remains whether, along with progression, we are losing some of that pure, simple joy that a new eraser or notebook once represented.
Summary
The UAE's educational system has developed spectacularly over 20 years and now offers world-class services to students. However, this progress comes with significant costs that place families under increasing financial pressure. While children today have everything, perhaps they still lack some of the modesty and simplicity that once characterized school years.
