Self-driving Vehicles Revolutionize Dubai Airport Logistics

Self-driving Vehicles Transport Luggage at Dubai Airport
The intersection of technology and air travel has reached a new level at Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport. The airport service provider, dnata, announced the deployment of a fleet of six fully electric, self-driving vehicles that can tow up to four containers simultaneously at a speed of up to 15 km/h on predefined routes.
Why is this innovation significant?
Traditional baggage handling methods require human drivers who work under tight time constraints, often in risky environments. The application of self-driving vehicles not only makes airport operations faster and more efficient but also reduces the potential for human error, directly increasing safety in the so-called "airside" areas, where aircraft movement and servicing occur.
What technology is being used?
The vehicles in use are EZTow models developed by TractEasy. These autonomous tractors currently operate with Level 3 autonomy, requiring minimal human oversight. The goal is to achieve Level 4 autonomy by 2026, enabling fully independent operation in a closed, controlled environment. The project cost reached 6 million dirhams.
Regulation and Collaboration
The development process involved a full year of collaboration among the concerned organizations – including Dubai Airport, TractEasy, GCAA, and dnata – to create a new regulatory framework that allows for the safe operation of self-driving vehicles in the airport's restricted area.
The Airport of the Future
This initiative is not just a technological experiment but a deliberate step towards establishing Dubai as home to the world's largest airport in terms of capacity. Plans indicate that DWC will be able to serve up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tons of cargo annually. In this environment, reliable, efficient, and safe logistics play a key role.
Why is it worth paying attention to?
According to IATA, more than 15 countries worldwide are experimenting with self-driving ground service vehicles, but Dubai is among the first to use them daily. This also means that the city is once again taking a pioneering role in the digitization and automation of air transportation.
As air traffic continues to grow globally, such innovations could be the key to making airports more flexible, faster, and sustainable – and Dubai is once again at the forefront.
