Save Food and Money in Dubai with Platable

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a revolutionary change is underway to reduce food waste. A new app, Platable, allows residents to purchase food, desserts, or drinks from their favorite restaurants and grocery stores at discounts of up to 60%. This innovative solution not only saves consumers money but also contributes to a significant reduction in food waste in the region.
In the Gulf region, it's estimated that about 30% of all produced food goes to waste. This figure represents not only an economic loss but also has serious environmental impacts. The UAE aims to halve food waste by 2030, and the Platable app is part of the solution. The app allows restaurants and grocery stores to offer their surplus but still consumable food at discounted prices instead of throwing it away.
Platable is a platform where restaurants and food businesses can list their excess stocks. Consumers can purchase these food items at discounts of up to 60%. The co-founder and CEO of Platable explained that the app aims to help restaurants avoid discarding surplus food while generating revenue from it.
For example, a doughnut shop that throws away 300-400 pieces daily can now sell them at discounted prices through the app. Consumers can purchase these products between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. at half the original price.
Platable benefits both consumers and restaurants. Previously, restaurants' only option was to discard surplus food, but now they can generate income from it. The app allows people who couldn't regularly afford these brands to access quality food.
Currently, Dubai restaurants are featured on the app, but there's a plan to expand the service to the entire UAE and later to the GCC region. The Platable beta version is already available on the App Store and PlayStore, with an official launch planned for Ramadan 2025.
Since the launch of Platable's beta version in November, over 50 brands have joined the app, and more than 3,000 downloads have been recorded. Currently, 7-10 orders are placed daily, but this number is expected to increase to 1,000 daily orders after the official launch. Platable's revenue model is simple: the platform takes a small percentage commission from restaurants, but there are no costs for buyers.
Platable isn't the only platform of its kind. In the West, Too Good to Go has been successfully operating with a similar approach to reducing food waste. Restaurants offer "surprise boxes" through the app, where the contents aren't always known in advance. For example, a box might contain six doughnuts, but the customer only finds out the varieties after purchase. This element adds excitement to the purchasing experience.
Platable is not just an app but a social responsibility initiative that aims to benefit both restaurants and consumers while contributing to sustainability. The platform can have a significant long-term impact on reducing food waste and making quality food more affordable for everyday consumers.
