Abu Dhabi Aviation Expansion Boosts Connectivity

Abu Dhabi Aviation Takes Off: Air Arabia and Etihad Expand Networks
The aviation market in Abu Dhabi is undergoing significant changes in 2025 after a key player, Wizz Air, announced its withdrawal from the region. The Eastern European low-cost airline will cease its flights from Abu Dhabi in September, citing geopolitical uncertainty and sporadic airspace closures as reasons. However, the withdrawal has opened up opportunities for other players – a chance that Air Arabia Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways have quickly seized.
Air Arabia Abu Dhabi's Spectacular Growth
As the emirate's first budget airline, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi has expanded its fleet with two new Airbus A320 aircraft, bringing its total to 12. By the end of the year, two more planes are expected to arrive, boosting current capacity by 40 percent in 2025. The airline aims to become more competitive in the short and medium-haul market and enhance Abu Dhabi’s position among regional transport hubs.
Alongside the fleet expansion, the route network has also grown. New destinations include Yerevan, Almaty, and Sialkot, allowing Air Arabia Abu Dhabi to offer direct flights to over 30 cities across the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and Eastern Europe.
Etihad Airways: New Strategy, New Destinations
It's not only the low-cost segment that is stirring the market. The national airline, Etihad Airways, has announced a new strategy that includes the addition of seven new destinations. These include Almaty (Kazakhstan), Baku (Azerbaijan), Bucharest (Romania), Medina (Saudi Arabia), Tbilisi (Georgia), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), and Yerevan (Armenia). Etihad's goal is to strengthen direct, "point-to-point" traffic, making Abu Dhabi more appealing not just as a transit point but as a destination in its own right.
Competition on New Foundations
With Wizz Air’s departure, the market is expected to realign, particularly among price-sensitive travelers. Although ticket prices may rise in some cases, affordable flying options remain available with other low-cost carriers such as SalamAir, Flynas, SpiceJet, Jazeera Airways, Flyadeal, Air Arabia, or Fly Jinnah.
Overall, these changes indicate that Abu Dhabi is actively working on strengthening aviation connections, with the long-term aim of being an integral part of not just the capital's, but the entire UAE's economic and tourism strategy. The expansions by Air Arabia and Etihad not only present new travel opportunities but also reinforce the emirate's position on the global aviation map.
