Unveiling Historic Dubai: Must-Visit Spots

Dubai is a city where the contrasts of the old and new worlds are strikingly evident. While the city is characterized by glitzy opulence and impressive skyscrapers, it also retains the charm of the old world, beautifully preserved in the Al Fahidi Historical District.

The Al Fahidi District is rich in heritage and remnants of traditional culture. Walking along the banks of the Dubai Creek offers a glimpse into a bygone era. Once a flourishing trading gateway and a successful pearl diving site, the creek remains a bustling hub for fishermen and traders who navigate the calm waters in traditional dhow boats.

Just strolling through the narrow alleys and lanes of the historical quarter makes you feel as if you have traveled back in time.

Here are some must-try activities:

Abra Boat Ride

A visit is incomplete without a boat trip on a traditional wooden boat – known as an abra. The abra boats run regularly throughout the day, crossing the channel between Al Fahidi, Bur Dubai, and Deira. There are four stations along Dubai Creek. The journey costs only 1 dirham (AED), but the experience it offers is priceless.

Al Fahidi District

Previously known as Al Bastikiya, the Al Fahidi District dates back to the 19th century and is rich with historic sites. It once served as a commercial center for textile and pearl traders, and walking through its labyrinthine streets offers a chance to admire carefully restored gypsum and coral buildings. It's easy to lose yourself for a few hours here, given the numerous sights and the atmosphere.

Souk Visit

A visit to Dubai is incomplete without a trip to its famous markets or souks – whether it is the gold, spice, or textile markets. If time permits, you can explore all three souks within a single day. These markets offer a wide array of rich handicraft products, including jewelry, fresh spices, herbs, fabrics, and clothing. The spice souk is particularly captivating, with scents that fill the air, providing a true sensory experience.

Dubai Museum

For a truly cultural experience, a visit to the Dubai Museum is worthwhile. The museum is housed in the historic Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1787. The exhibits showcase Dubai's history and original heritage, offering insight into what life was like before the discovery of oil in the United Arab Emirates. Exhibits include displays of Arabic houses, mosques, souks, date farms, and depictions of desert and marine lifestyles. There are numerous other museums and cultural landmarks in the area.
