UAE's Cool Mountain Escapes

UAE Summer Cool Havens: 21.4°C Temperature Relief
During the summer months, temperatures along the UAE's coastal areas often exceed 50°C, but there are elevated spots in the country where the temperature can evoke the freshness of early winter mornings. In these locations, even the summer highs are much milder, allowing residents to enjoy outdoor activities under more favorable conditions.
Where are the coolest spots?
In recent days, Jebel Jais (Ras Al Khaimah) recorded 23.1°C, Mount Mebreh in Fujairah hit 24.4°C, while Jabal Al Rahba, Al Farfar, and Jebel Hafeet (Al Ain) also showed similarly pleasant morning temperatures. A week earlier, Mount Al Heben reached 21.4°C, marking the lowest temperature in the country on that particular day.
Why are the mountains cooler?
The explanation is based on simple physical factors:
Elevation – With increased altitude above sea level, temperatures decrease.
Night cooling and mountain winds – Nighttime temperatures drop more significantly in the mountains, and air movement has a refreshing effect.
Distance from cities and the sea – The heat island effect and humid coastal air are less prevalent.
The daytime temperature difference between mountain tops and coastal areas is generally 5–10°C, and can be even greater at night. This year, due to the intensity of coastal heat waves, this contrast is even more noticeable.
Life in the mountains
Those living in the mountains enjoy milder temperatures during summer, require less air conditioning, spend more time outdoors, and can engage in certain agricultural activities and animal husbandry. These conditions also boost domestic tourism.
Touristic appeal
The cooler climate in summer months attracts increasing numbers of visitors, particularly during heatwaves. However, not every "cool spot" is equally accessible: for instance, the highest point of Jebel Jais (1800 m) is only partially accessible, with the highest public access point at 1360 m, where summer temperatures are generally 29–32°C.
Significant temperature drop on cloudy days
The mountains along the eastern coast and the Kalba–Dibba line (650–720 m) are often shrouded in clouds during summer mornings. During these times, temperatures drop to 18–23°C, and visitors might even require a coat. The proximity to clouds not only provides a dramatic view but also results in significant cooling, as the water droplets and ice crystals block sunlight and absorb heat.
Easily accessible recommended locations
Al Suhub Resting Area (650 m, Khor Fakkan, Sharjah) – Accessible by any vehicle.
Farfar Mountain (710 m, Fujairah) – Only accessible by off-road vehicle.
These areas offer an ideal refuge for nature lovers and those seeking a cooler environment in the scorching summer heat.
