The United Arab Emirates has once again reinforced its position at the top of the global mobility rankings, as the UAE passport retained the title of the world's strongest passport in 2026. According to the latest data from the Passport Index, the Emirati passport achieved a record score of 182, marking another milestone in the country's international relations, diplomatic weight, and global participation. The UAE has led this list since 2018, consistently increasing its lead over several European and Asian countries in recent years.

The ranking is not merely a statistical data point or a matter of prestige. In the modern world, the strength of a passport holds significant economic, business, and social significance. According to the Passport Index, UAE citizens can currently travel visa-free to 127 countries. Moreover, an additional 45 countries offer visas on arrival, while 10 countries provide electronic travel authorization. There are only 16 destinations left requiring a traditional visa.

This 91% global accessibility is extremely high, especially in a period when many countries are introducing stricter border control and immigration regulations. Recent years' geopolitical conflicts, global security risks, and the development of digital border security systems have often restricted travel freedom in many countries. However, the UAE has moved in precisely the opposite direction, further strengthening its international relationships.

The success behind the Emirati passport is not due to chance development. The nation has pursued a deliberate diplomatic strategy for many years, aimed at increasing international mobility. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched the UAE Passport Force Initiative program back in 2017, with the goal for the country's passport to rank among the world's top five by 2021. The outcome exceeded all expectations.

World-Class in Less than a Decade

The UAE passport was previously far from outstanding in global rankings. Less than a decade ago, it was around the 88th position. Thus, the current top position represents extraordinarily rapid advancement.

The turning point, according to many experts, came in 2015 when UAE citizens were granted visa-free access to Schengen Area countries. This was a historic step, as the UAE became the first Arab country whose citizens could travel visa-free to a significant part of Europe.

This agreement not only facilitated travel but also reflected significant political and economic trust from Europe. Since then, the UAE's diplomatic network has expanded further, new bilateral agreements have been made, and the country's role has become increasingly important in the global economy.

In recent years, Dubai and Abu Dhabi have become pivotal centers in the international business world. Leading global corporations, investment funds, and tech companies are establishing an increasing presence in the nation. Achievements in tourism, the financial sector, logistics, and innovation have all contributed to making the UAE passport highly valuable today.

The World is Closing, but the UAE Stands Out

While the UAE has expanded its global reach, Passport Index data shows that the world's overall openness has decreased. The World Openness Score in 2026 fell to its lowest level since 2023.

Experts point to the spread of digital border security systems as a principal reason for this. More countries are applying electronic pre-screening, biometric checks, and special travel permits. Additionally, many nations have tightened visa regulations for highly skilled workers or specific nationalities.

Interestingly, several countries once considered extremely open have slipped in the “welcoming countries” list. Australia, Canada, the United States, and New Zealand, for example, have introduced stricter systems. Europe also saw significant changes with the introduction of the ETIAS system, which altered travel rules across 30 European countries.

In this environment, the UAE’s performance is particularly noteworthy. The country continues to operate as an open business hub while modernizing its security and digital surveillance systems.

Europe Dominates, but UAE Stands Unique

The top 20 list in the Passport Index continues to be primarily dominated by European countries. Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Denmark remain among the strongest passports.

From Asia, Singapore held its second position, while Malaysia also kept its place in the leading group. Interestingly, although Asia accounts for nearly half of global GDP growth, this isn’t fully reflected in passport rankings. Japan and South Korea, for instance, have fallen from previous positions.

The UAE, however, is in a unique position. Geographically a part of the Middle East, economically a global player, and diplomatically building a stronger international network, its unique position has allowed the country to become one of the world’s most important international centers.

Dubai’s airport remains one of the world’s busiest international air hubs, while Abu Dhabi plays an increasingly important role in the field of financial and technological investments.
