UAE Flag Day: 1,200 Hikers Conquer Peak

Flag Day at the Peak – 1,200 Hikers Climb Jebel Jais in Honor of UAE
United Arab Emirates Flag Day is a special occasion celebrated every year, which honors national unity, pride, and community spirit. This year, however, the celebration extended beyond cities, schools, and government buildings – over 1,200 enthusiastic hikers set out to conquer UAE's highest mountain peak, Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, to raise the national flag at 1,900 meters above sea level.
Community Experience at Nature's Peak
The event, called "Towards the Summit of the Nation," was held on November 1st, jointly organized by the Ras Al Khaimah Youth Council, the Sports Ministry, Emirates Sports for All Federation, and various hiking organizations, including ATC Adventures. Participants came not only from different emirates of the UAE but also from other countries, such as Oman and India, to celebrate together.
This form of celebrating Flag Day was not just a hike but a truly symbolic act: an expression of national pride, love for natural beauty, and community solidarity.
8-Kilometer Journey in the Spirit of Unity
The hiking route was 8 kilometers long, with 4 kilometers requiring an ascent. The organizers placed great emphasis on the safety of the participants, and every section of the route was carefully prepared and supervised. Participants ranged from experienced mountaineers and families to those embarking on a serious hike for the first time in their lives.
During the ascent, many helped and encouraged each other, and when they finally reached the summit, the flag-raising was not only a spectacular but also a touching moment. Many watched with tears in their eyes as the national flag waved in the wind at the nearly 2,000-meter-high mountain peak.
International Participation and Cultural Exchange
The event was unique because it included not only UAE citizens but also numerous foreign residents and tourists. A group of 13 Omani hikers attended, who regularly participate in regional hikes. Indian hikers residing in Dubai also eagerly joined – some even brought visiting family members along to showcase the natural beauty of the country.
This event created an opportunity for cultures to meet: people from various backgrounds, speaking different languages, celebrated together with a shared goal and values at heart.
Discovering Nature from a New Perspective
The hike was led by a mountain guide working in Ras Al Khaimah, who stated that it was one of the largest hiking events in the Middle East. According to him, more than a thousand reached the summit, and everyone returned safely and happily. He emphasized that thanks to social media, more and more people are discovering the hidden natural treasures of the UAE.
People are often surprised by the photos and videos of lush valleys, winding mountain roads, or spectacular cliffs – as many still associate the United Arab Emirates solely with sand dunes, skyscrapers, and luxury hotels. Yet, the mountainous areas are just as magical and ideal for active recreation.
Bringing Down the Flag: A Symbol of Unity
One of the most moving moments of the event was bringing the flag down. One of the organizers, who also participated as a hiker, described it as an indescribable feeling to bring the flag down from the mountain. The pride, happiness, and sense of being part of something special were visible on every participant’s face.
This simple yet grand gesture truly exemplifies how a community experience can become a tool for strengthening national identity. Such a hike can be not only a physical challenge but also a spiritual purification – especially when driven by a noble cause, like respect for the country.
The Future: More Hikes, More Nature-based Experiences
Both organizers and participants believe that such events will play an increasingly significant role in the UAE’s community and cultural life. Hiking, as a healthy lifestyle and eco-friendly leisure activity, perfectly aligns with the country's aim to promote an active, conscious lifestyle.
Ras Al Khaimah and Jebel Jais mountain can host numerous programs in the future – from hiking to cycling and even paragliding. More and more people are choosing these alternatives over classic urban entertainment, as nature's closeness offers new perspectives to all of us.
Summary
The UAE Flag Day is not just a symbol but a genuine community celebration. The hike held at Jebel Jais mountain peak was both a physical challenge, a spiritual experience, and a national celebration. The more than a thousand participants set an example of unity, courage, and respect – not only towards the country but also towards each other. The flag waved not only on the mountain but in the hearts of all participants.
