The UAE Increases Checks: No Employment on Visitor Visa
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have introduced stricter measures against those who work in the country on a visitor visa. According to travel agencies, due to regular checks and stricter penalties, the number of illegal residents has significantly decreased.
Checks Intensify After Amnesty Ends
The stricter enforcement began after the expiration of a generous amnesty program, which was in effect from September to December 2024. This provided an opportunity for those with visa-related issues to legalize their status or leave the country without penalty. The program helped thousands, but after it ended, authorities intensified their investigations.
In January, over 6000 violators were arrested, and company inspections have since continued. A travel agency head noted that the number of those surviving on visitor visas has been more than halved, with less than 10% now remaining who previously stayed illegally.
Severe Penalties and Deportations
Working on a visitor visa has always been prohibited in the UAE, but now the enforcement of these rules is stricter. Companies hiring workers without the proper permits can be fined between 100,000 and 1 million dirhams. The affected workers are immediately deported.
Travel agencies emphasize the importance of adhering to the rules and warn all guest workers of the risks. Since the amnesty's expiration, surprise inspections have become more frequent, and authorities are taking serious steps to eliminate illegal employment.
New Rules and Changes
The UAE has recently amended the conditions related to tourist visas. Now, those arriving with a tourist visa are required to have:
- A return flight ticket,
- Reserved accommodation,
- And sufficient financial coverage (in cash or in a bank account).
These changes make it harder for anyone to exploit workers who previously often remained stranded without being able to pay the fine or travel home.

While the stricter rules may initially cause difficulties, they can help in promoting fair working conditions and legal immigration in the long term. According to travel agencies, thanks to the regulation, there are fewer instances of people staying in the country without a visa, which supports the UAE's economic stability.
