Stay Safe on UAE Public Wi-Fi Networks

Free Wi-Fi in the UAE: How to Protect Yourself from Hidden Cyber Attacks
The UAE Cybersecurity Council has issued a warning after more than 12,000 incidents related to public Wi-Fi networks were registered in the first eight months of 2025 in the country. This alarming figure accounted for about 35 percent of all cyber incidents, highlighting that public, free internet access points – whether in cafes, airports, shopping malls, or even hotels – pose a serious threat to users' digital security.
The Hidden Risks of Public Wi-Fi Networks
Many users are unaware that public Wi-Fi networks not only offer convenience but also pose risks. According to the council, most of these networks lack proper encryption, making them ideal targets for hackers. In so-called "man-in-the-middle" attacks, cybercriminals can intercept and interpret the data transmitted by users – whether passwords, credit card information, emails, or even phone calls.
Attackers often resort to tricks such as counterfeit login pages (phishing), where users unknowingly provide their sensitive data. Additionally, infected networks can install spyware or other malware on connected devices, which later continuously monitor activity, gather data, or paralyze the device with ransomware.
Three Basic Rules for Safe Browsing
The Cyber Security Council suggests three main steps for anyone using public networks:
1. Use a reliable VPN
A reputable VPN application encrypts all internet traffic and hides the IP address, preventing third parties from tracking online activities. The VPN creates a virtual tunnel, which makes it more difficult for attackers, even if data traffic occurs through public networks.
2. Activate safe browsing features
Most modern browsers – such as Chrome or Firefox – offer an option that automatically blocks suspicious sites and warns of potentially dangerous content. It is advisable to keep this feature enabled, especially on unknown networks.
3. Avoid logging into sensitive accounts
Do not open your bank account, check personal emails, or shop online over public Wi-Fi networks. These activities should be carried out on mobile internet or a trusted home network instead.
National Digital Protection and Campaigns
The head of the council confirmed that the UAE continuously works towards creating a secure digital ecosystem that keeps pace with technological advancements while ensuring the protection of users' data. This is part of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at strengthening digital trust and spreading cybersecurity awareness.
To this end, the Cyber Pulse initiative launched weekly awareness campaigns. This year's second weekly campaign theme is: "Free Wi-Fi can expose your personal data." The campaign targets not only individuals but also institutions, offering practical advice on how to protect data over the internet.
VPN as a Fundamental Defense Tool
The council emphasizes that a reliable VPN not only protects data traffic but also plays an important role in preserving digital identity. Protecting online identity is now essential, especially in a world where personal and financial data are both targets for attackers.
It is important to note that not all VPN services are reliable. It is advisable to choose a provider with appropriate encryption protocols, a no-log policy, and, if possible, server availability in several countries.
Awareness: The First Line of Defense
No matter how advanced a technological solution is, user awareness is the first line of defense against cyberattacks. A careless click, a hasty login, or an unconsidered Wi-Fi connection can be sufficient for an attacker to gain access to our device.
The UAE's cybersecurity strategy therefore not only relies on technological developments but also on widespread information dissemination and education. The goal is for both the public and companies to be aware of the risks and how to minimize them.
Summary
The more than 12,000 public Wi-Fi-related cyber incidents registered so far in 2025 are a serious warning to everyone. While free internet connection options are convenient, they often carry hidden dangers. A reliable VPN, safe browsing features, and conscious online presence are now essential to protect our data and digital identity.
The Cyber Security Council’s initiatives – including the Cyber Pulse campaign – are exemplary steps towards a safer digital future. Let's use them and remember: free Wi-Fi can indeed cost a lot – if we are not careful.
