Salik Toll Exemption Guide for Dubai Residents

Exemption from Salik Toll in Dubai: Eligibility, Application Process, and Tips
As commuters navigate Dubai’s road network, they often encounter the Salik system – an entirely automated electronic toll collection system aimed at more effectively managing urban traffic. The Salik system allows vehicles to pass through designated gates without congestion while automatically deducting tolls from the vehicle's pre-loaded account. Currently, there are ten gates installed on the busiest roads.
However, not everyone is required to pay the Salik toll – the UAE government provides exemptions for certain residents as a humane and supportive measure. Below, we outline who is eligible for this waiver, how to apply, and what to consider during the procedure.
Who is Eligible for Salik Toll Exemption?
The purpose of the exemption program is to support residents with specific needs. Currently, the following groups can apply for exemption:
Individuals with mental disabilities
Individuals with physical disabilities
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder
Visually impaired persons
Additionally, close relatives of individuals with disabilities can apply for an exemption for their own vehicle. Eligible relatives include:
Parents
Spouse (with valid marriage certificate)
Children (with birth certificate)
Grandparents
Siblings
Grandchildren
What Documents are Required?
When submitting a new application, the following documents must be attached:
Copy of valid vehicle registration under the name of the eligible individual or relative
Copy of valid Emirates ID
Copy of the People of Determination card issued by the Ministry of Community Development or the Sanad card
Official document verifying the relationship (if the vehicle is not in the name of the person with a disability)
All documents must be sent electronically to the following email address: specialaccounts@salik.ae
How Long is the Exemption Valid?
The Salik toll exemption is valid for one year. After expiration, the applicant must renew the exemption annually. The same documents must be resubmitted as for the original application. If the vehicle changes, the previous exemption must be canceled, and a new application must be submitted for the updated vehicle.
How to Submit the Application?
1. Via the Salik website:
The applicant fills out the online form and uploads the required documents.
The Salik special customer service team reviews the application.
Upon approval, the customer is notified via phone.
2. Via email:
The applicant downloads the commitment form from the Salik website or requests it via email.
Completes the form and sends it with the necessary documents to specialaccounts@salik.ae.
Customer service processes the application and sends a notification of the result.
Other Important Information
The service is completely free of charge.
The evaluation time is up to five working days, provided all documents are received in full.
An exemption can be claimed for only one vehicle per person. However, the exemption can be transferred to another vehicle upon the cancellation of the previous one.
Those who apply for the first time and do not yet have a Salik tag will receive the first tag free of charge.
How Does the Salik System Work?
The Salik system uses RFID (radio frequency identification) technology. Each time a vehicle passes through a Salik gate, the system automatically detects the tag and deducts the current toll from the pre-loaded account. The system is fully automated – there's no need to stop or pass through physical barriers.
