Safety Warning on Coastal Dangers in Fujairah

Warning to Prevent Coastal Accidents – 27 Drowning Cases in 2024
Fujairah, located on the eastern side of the United Arab Emirates, is particularly popular for its coastal beaches during the summer months. However, this year's season has not just been about blissful beach outings – 2024 has already seen 27 registered drowning incidents, six more than the same period last year.
Authorities believe most accidents could have been prevented if basic safety regulations had been adhered to. Rescue teams successfully saved 26 individuals – including locals and foreign nationals – from the water, but sadly, there has been one fatality. Official bodies emphasized: “The sea is never predictable. Adhering to safety precautions can be a matter of life and death.”
Sources of Danger: Prohibited Swimming and Technical Faults
Reports indicate that numerous incidents occurred in areas without lifeguard presence or where swimming was expressly forbidden. Additionally, common problems were the lack of life jackets and the technical condition of boats, such as maintenance shortcomings or overloading. Some boats also experienced ventilation system failures in fuel systems, posing a serious risk.
The 'Sailing Safely' Initiative and Increased Patrolling
The Fujairah Fishermen’s Association continues to operate its 'Sailing Safely' program, which provides free safety checks and preventive maintenance for registered fishing boats. This is a pivotal part of the prevention strategy employed in the emirate to reduce maritime accidents.
Furthermore, authorities have reinforced that they will increase coastal patrolling and launch awareness campaigns among residents during the summer months. The aim is to convey the simple yet crucial life-saving safety advice to as many people as possible.
Basic Safety Rules at the Waterside
Authorities have published the following recommendations for all residents planning coastal and boating activities:
Always wear a life jacket, especially when boating or swimming in open waters
Avoid unmonitored or prohibited swimming areas
Always check weather forecasts for sea conditions before heading out
Never leave children unattended near water
These measures may seem simple, but they can save lives. Rescue services are ready to intervene if necessary, but as they stated: “Real safety begins with caution.”
During the summer months, when coastal activities increase, awareness is particularly crucial. Water is not a toy, and both locals and tourists need to remember that respect for nature and preparedness can both contribute to a safer summer experience along Fujairah’s shores.
