Record Heat in UAE: 50.1 ºC Breached

The temperature rose to 50.1 ºC in the Al Ain region - the summer heat peak is approaching.
As the peak of summer approaches in the United Arab Emirates, the country's meteorological service (NCM) has issued a warning: on June 14th, at 12:30 PM, a temperature of 50.1 ºC was recorded in the Sweihan area, near Al Ain. This temperature is not only considered extraordinary, but it also poses serious health risks, particularly for more sensitive groups – the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses.
Pushing the boundaries of temperature records.
Following the 50.8 ºC measured on June 9th, this new extreme value reinforces the observation that the heat is not only stronger but more persistent. The daily heat is lasting longer, and the average temperature has increased by more than 1.5 ºC compared to previous years. This not only indicates a local increase in weather extremes but could also be a local manifestation of the global climate change consequences.
In May, the country experienced the hottest May in over twenty years. On May 24th, a temperature of 51.6 ºC was registered in the Sweihan area, which is the highest May temperature in the country since official records began in 2003.
How to protect against extreme heat?
Authorities are once again reminding the public that such extreme heat can pose significant dangers if proper precautions are not taken:
Avoid outdoor activities during the midday hours, especially between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Wear light, loose-fitting clothing made of natural materials, and use a hat or umbrella if staying outdoors.
Use sunscreen if your skin is exposed to sunlight.
Pay attention to children and elderly family members, especially if they stay in non-air-conditioned places for extended periods.
Prevention can save lives.
Heat-related health problems - such as heatstroke, dehydration, and heat exhaustion - can develop rapidly and may require medical intervention. Experts particularly emphasize not leaving anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, even for a short time.
Summary.
The extreme heatwave experienced in the UAE is not just a seasonal phenomenon but a tangible consequence of climate change, posing new challenges for residents, employers, and the healthcare system as well. Conscious preparation and adherence to precautions are essential to safely endure the increasingly hot summer months ahead.
