Ras Al Khaimah's Green Oasis: Al Riffa Park

Ras Al Khaimah's Green Future: Al Riffa Park to Open by Year-End
In recent years, the city of Ras Al Khaimah has increasingly focused on sustainability, community life, and the expansion of urban green spaces. This effort is well demonstrated by the construction of the new Al Riffa Park, set to open to visitors by the end of the year. The project not only signifies the establishment of a new park but the creation of a complex community space that could become the center for nature, sports, family, and sustainable living in the region.
A Park that Goes Beyond Walkways
Construction on Al Riffa Park began in May, strategically timed to allow the trees and plants sufficient time to establish their roots before visitors take over the area. The park, which spans over 720,000 square feet, will have more than 70% of its area covered in greenery—a remarkable ratio for an urban development of this size. The location is also significant; the new community space will be built where an old residential area once stood, breathing new life into the neighborhood.
The park will be completely open to the public without an entrance fee. The aim is for everyone—families, young people, elderly, and those seeking to exercise—to feel at home in the park. Plans include multiple playgrounds, shaded and open sports courts (for football, basketball, volleyball, tennis), a skate park, a running track, and a variety of seating areas. Instead of fences, the tree-lined zone surrounding the park will provide a natural boundary that offers both security and openness.
Focus on Sustainability
Al Riffa Park is about more than entertainment and relaxation; it also implements exemplary environmental solutions. The park uses recycled and treated water for irrigation, sourced from the nearby Al Rifaa water treatment facility. About 150 cubic meters of water will be delivered daily to the vegetation, allowing the landscape to remain green throughout the year.
During construction, all existing ghaf trees—which are native to the area and hold symbolic importance in UAE heritage—were preserved. Additionally, neem and sidr trees were planted to provide natural shade along the paths and resting areas. The park's 1.5-kilometer water pipeline system ensures long-term vegetation maintenance while reducing water consumption.
Rethinking Community Spaces
Al Riffa Park was created as a community space that simultaneously serves relaxation, active lifestyles, and social connections. The project includes ten special features for people with disabilities, making the park truly accessible to all.
The infrastructure is well thought out, featuring seven service buildings, a zone for food trucks, commercial spaces, four prayer rooms, restrooms, and nearly 100 parking spaces, including six electric car charging stations. Small fences will enclose playgrounds, and extra seating will cater to the comfort of parents. A modern CCTV system, public address network, and a dedicated security building will ensure safety.
The central area of the park will feature a gently rising hill, serving as a viewpoint. Here, visitors can not only relax but also visually take in the full extent of the park. A mini market zone will provide local entrepreneurs with an opportunity to directly offer their products to the community.
The Future Green City of Ras Al Khaimah
In recent years, Ras Al Khaimah has consistently developed green and family-friendly infrastructure. Currently, three other public parks are under construction, with four more planned. Al Riffa Park holds a prominent place among these, as its size and concept embody the ideals of sustainability, accessibility, and community-building.
The project serves as an example of how an urban space can be environmentally friendly, functional, and community-focused. The well-planned infrastructure, climate-adapted greenery, and inclusive approach show that Ras Al Khaimah may become a model for future urban development throughout the UAE.
Summary
Al Riffa Park is not just a new green space on the map. It is a well-thought-out, sustainable community project that combines modern urban planning with respect for traditions and the strengthening of communal values. Once the park opens by the end of the year, residents and visitors of Ras Al Khaimah will gain a space that will significantly contribute to improving the quality of life in the long term—and set an example of how to make the future greener and more livable.
