RAK Police: Life Jackets Mandatory, Swimming Not Enough

RAK Police Issue Life Jacket Warning Amid Water Sports Surge
As the summer season arrives in the UAE, more people are flocking to beaches and seeking water sports adventures, such as jet skiing, water skiing, or a simple beach day cruise. However, water not only offers fun but also presents dangers, especially when basic safety guidelines are ignored.
Ahead of the upcoming season, the Ras Al Khaimah Police issued a special warning urging all residents and visitors to wear life jackets, even if they consider themselves confident swimmers.
Why isn't swimming knowledge enough?
Many tend to underestimate the power of water, particularly if they have some experience. During a water accident, such as being capsized by a jet ski or water scooter, one can easily lose consciousness. In such situations, even the best swimmers may not be able to save themselves. Without a life jacket, the chance of drowning significantly increases.
Authorities emphasize: life jackets can save lives, and they are not solely for non-swimmers.
Rescue operations in practice
The work of marine rescue units is complex and often extremely demanding, particularly when the exact location of an accident is unknown. In such cases, various search methods are applied, including circular, U-shaped, or T-shaped formations.
In the so-called T-shaped search method, the boat remains anchored, directing divers with a rope connected to a long metal rod. This method is mainly used when underwater visibility is poor. However, this type of search can also be dangerous if the topography of the location is unknown, such as anchoring ships or underwater obstacles.
The problem of jet skis and reckless behavior
Another common cause of marine accidents is irresponsible jet skiing. Coastal patrols encounter daily instances of visitors not taking the rules seriously — often speeding, failing to keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and not wearing any protective equipment.
The goal of authorities is not only to impose fines but also to educate. Education and awareness are as crucial as law enforcement, especially in a tourist destination with a continuous influx of new visitors who may not be familiar with local regulations.
Special rescue equipment: the work behind the scenes
Rescue units use several tools, such as inflatable lifting bags operated with compressed air cylinders. These are employed when someone needs to be freed from under a vehicle. Lifting bags can have a load capacity of 10 tons or more, so accurate assessment and appropriate equipment selection are indispensable.
The type of equipment used depends on the circumstances. In colder waters, rescuers wear insulated diving suits, while in extreme conditions, they use waterproof dry suits that protect them from freezing and hazardous chemicals.
Summary: Safety is always paramount
As the weather warms, more people choose the beach for relaxation, and that's perfectly fine. However, fun cannot come at the expense of safety. Whether you're a professional swimmer or trying jet skiing for the first time, wearing a life jacket is not optional — it's a life-saving tool.
The message from Ras Al Khaimah Police is simple yet firm: swimming skills are not enough — a life jacket can save lives. Everyone venturing into UAE waters is responsible for their own and others' safety.
