Old Traffic Fines Erased for a Fee

Sharjah has taken another step in managing outdated traffic fines: from now on, those with traffic violations older than ten years have the opportunity to have them erased upon the payment of a one-time fee. This decision was announced at the latest council meeting held at the Sharjah Ruler's office.
Which fines can be erased?
According to the decree, traffic fines issued at least ten years ago fall under this measure. For these cases, the punishment can now be requested to be erased with the payment of a one-time Dh1,000 fee.
Exceptional cases - when no payment is required
Authorities exempt individuals from paying the fee under certain circumstances. The exceptions are as follows:
Death of the vehicle owner: If it can be credibly proven that the vehicle's owner has passed away, the fine can be erased free of charge.
Extended foreign residency: If the vehicle owner has not been in the UAE for at least 10 consecutive years and proves this with documents, they are also exempt from payment.
Abandoned vehicles: If a vehicle has not been used for years and its owner is unreachable or at an unknown location, fines related to these vehicles can be erased without payment.
Why is this measure important?
The new regulation aims to alleviate administrative burdens stemming from old, often irrelevant fines, and to address cases where enforcement is no longer feasible. This can be particularly advantageous for those who bought old cars or who have not used their vehicle for a long time and were surprised by accumulated penalties.
Moreover, the measure aligns with the UAE's efforts to create a digitalized, efficient, and fair administrative environment for citizens and residents.
How can one apply for the erasure?
Applications for the erasure of the fine can be submitted to the Sharjah traffic authorities. The application requires providing vehicle details, and if exemption is sought, attaching the necessary official documents. Following the fee payment, the authorities will officially delete the violation entry from the system.
Summary
Sharjah's new decision provides an opportunity to settle long-standing traffic fines either with a one-time fee or for free under specific conditions. This measure not only reduces the administrative burdens of residents but also supports transparency and lawful operation of the traffic system.
