Sri Lanka has taken another significant step to boost tourism: From May 25, 2026, it has introduced a free tourist ETA system for citizens from 40 countries. The measure affects travelers from the United Arab Emirates, India, Pakistan, and many other countries and is expected to give a substantial boost to the South Asian island nation's tourism sector in the coming period. This decision could be especially important for expats residing in the UAE who are looking for a short beach or cultural trip in the region.

Under the new regulation, citizens from the affected countries can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) free of charge, which allows for a 30-day stay in Sri Lanka. One important feature of this authorization is that it permits double entry, meaning travelers can enter the country twice within the 30-day period without needing to apply for a new authorization.

Growing Competition for Tourists in Asia

In recent years, several Asian countries have been trying to simplify entry regulations to increase tourist traffic. Following Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, Sri Lanka is now opening up significantly, particularly targeting travelers from the Gulf region.

The number of flights from the UAE to Sri Lanka is steadily increasing. Colombo has long been a popular destination among residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, mainly due to the short flight duration, tropical climate, luxury resorts, and affordable accommodations. The free ETA could further increase interest, as it eliminates an additional cost for travelers.

What Does Free ETA Mean Exactly?

The ETA is not a traditional visa but a preliminary electronic travel authorization. Travelers must still register online before departure, but the fee previously payable has now been waived for citizens of the affected countries.

The system applies to all types of passports officially issued by the respective countries, including diplomatic, service, official, and standard passports.

The 30-day stay period is counted from the first entry, and two entries are allowed within this period. This is particularly useful for those who plan to visit other South Asian countries during the same trip.

However, those who wish to stay longer than 30 days will need to submit an extension request, which remains fee-based. The new system primarily supports short-term tourism.

UAE Travelers Could Be One of the Biggest Beneficiaries

Sri Lanka has been a favorite destination for those residing in the United Arab Emirates for a long time. One reason is that there are several direct flights operating daily between Dubai and Colombo at various price levels. Besides premium airlines, discount options are also available, making the trip appealing to a broader audience.

Trips that don't require long flights or complicated visa procedures are becoming increasingly popular among Dubai residents. Sri Lanka fits perfectly into this category. A combination of beach vacations, tea plantations, historical temples, and safari-like national parks offers a unique experience.

The free ETA is especially beneficial for spontaneous trips. Many expats living in the UAE decide on a weekend or a few days' getaway shortly, and a straightforward online authorization system significantly facilitates arranging such trips.

Sri Lankan Tourism Could Grow Stronger Again

Sri Lanka's tourism industry has been facing serious challenges in recent years. Economic difficulties, the impact of the global pandemic, and global inflation have significantly reduced the number of tourists. The country is now trying to lure back visitors on multiple fronts.

These Countries Are on the List

The new system applies to citizens of a total of 40 countries. The list is wide-ranging and includes countries from multiple continents. Among the affected countries are Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In addition, citizens of the Maldives, Seychelles, and Singapore can also travel to Sri Lanka with preferential or special conditions based on separate bilateral agreements.

For example, Maldivian citizens receive a 90-day tourist permit through the ETA system.

What Should Travelers Be Aware Of?

Although the ETA has become free, online authorization is still mandatory. Travelers need to fill out the electronic application before departure and wait for approval.

Authorities have also warned that travelers who had already paid the ETA fee before May 25, 2026, will not receive a refund. Therefore, many are now monitoring current regulations and official updates.

The validity of the passport remains a crucial requirement, and travelers are advised to check the airlines' entry requirements as well, especially in the case of transit.

Competition in the Region's Tourism Market Could Intensify

The free ETA system clearly shows that the South Asian and Middle Eastern tourism markets are in an increasingly intense competition for travelers. More straightforward entry rules are now considered almost a basic requirement in international tourism.
