Dubai's Parking Wars: Gulfood Edition

Parking Dilemma at Gulfood Event
Dubai motorists faced an interesting decision on the first day of the Gulfood event: they preferred the high public parking fee of 25 dirhams (Dh) per hour over private parking charges of 80 dirhams per hour. This situation clearly illustrates how parking options and transportation strategies develop in the city during major events.
The Drastic Price Increase and Parking Choices
A significant public parking fee increase came into effect around the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on February 17, at the start of the Gulfood exhibition. Instead of the usual 4 dirhams per hour, the fee rose to 25 dirhams in zones 335X, 336X, and 337X. This change had been previously announced by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and the parking areas were marked with white signs to distinguish them from the usual orange ones.
Despite the increase, parking spaces were completely filled by 10 am. This shows that even the higher fees are a more acceptable option for motorists compared to the exclusive, but much more expensive, private parking choices. An exhibitor from Sharjah decided to pay for public parking, as DWTC's private parking fees ranged between 40 and 80 dirhams per hour. "This is a more cost-effective solution for me. I had a lot to bring today, so I came by car. Tomorrow I might choose the metro," he said.
Traffic Strategies and Managing Urban Traffic
The drastic increase was not merely a result of limited parking options, but part of Dubai's newly introduced Congestion Pricing Policy. This policy, announced by the RTA in November 2023, aims to reduce traffic congestion during major events. During the Gulfood event, this strategy was applied for the first time and will be extended to other event areas in the future.
A resident from Al Qusais stopped at the Al Mustaqbal parking area. "I arrived at 9 am and plan to stay until 6 pm. At the end of the day, I will pay around 200 dirhams since the first hour is 40 dirhams, followed by 20 dirhams every subsequent hour. Since there is no metro station near my home, the car is my only option," he explained.
The Significance of Gulfood
Gulfood, now in its 30th edition, is one of the world's largest food and beverage trade events. It attracts tens of thousands of visitors and 5,500 exhibitors from 129 countries. The event is expected to result in trade agreements worth more than 70 billion dirhams, making it highly significant not only for the food industry but also for the local economy and infrastructure.
Conclusion
The parking situation during the Gulfood event clearly demonstrates how Dubai is trying to manage the growth of urban traffic and parking needs. Despite the high parking fees, motorists were willing to pay for convenience, but more are considering public transportation alternatives. The introduction of the Congestion Pricing Policy unequivocally indicated that the city is serious about reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable transport.
Gulfood is not just a trade event but a platform through which Dubai showcases its increasingly innovative solutions to modern urban challenges. The parking dilemma is just a small slice of this complex process.
