Dubai's New Route Reduces Travel Time Drastically

Dubai has announced another transportation milestone: new entry and exit points from the MBZ (Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed) road to the Al Warqa district will open next week. According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the travel time, which was previously 20 minutes, will now be reduced to just 3.5 minutes, representing an impressive 80% improvement. Additionally, the road capacity will increase by 5,000 vehicles per hour, which is expected to significantly reduce congestion in the area.
Ambitious transportation developments around Al Warqa
The RTA announced developments around Al Warqa last October, aimed at not only expanding the road network but also improving the quality of life for local residents. Key travel distances will be significantly shortened, as drivers will now only need to travel 1.5 kilometers instead of the previous 5.7 kilometers.
Meanwhile, the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project is nearing completion, intended to optimize traffic between one of Dubai's main transport hubs, Al Khail Road, and MBZ Road. This project, with an estimated cost of 332 million dirhams, includes an 800-meter tunnel providing four lanes in each direction.
Internal road network developments
Significant traffic development work was undertaken by the RTA in the Al Warqa 1 district, particularly on Road 13, which affects daily routes for many local residents and students. The comprehensive internal road network development initiative spans about 8 kilometers, aiming to make traffic flow more smoothly.
In Al Warqa 3 and 4, the works include road paving, the construction of pedestrian walkways, expansion of parking spaces, and the creation of a 23-kilometer bicycle path network to promote alternative transportation forms.
Smart traffic lights and parking
The next development phase in Al Warqa 1 aims to transform roundabouts into intersections controlled by traffic lights equipped with smart technology. Traffic efficiency is expected to improve by 30%, with the completion of the works anticipated by year-end.
School area improvements
In Al Warqa 4, around schools such as the School of Research Science and GEMS Royal Dubai School, 150 new parking spaces have been established, improving accessibility and reducing congestion during morning and afternoon rush hours by 35-50%.
Infrastructure for new residential projects
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment's new residential project includes 136 new villas in Al Warqa 4. The associated developments include infrastructure to accommodate pedestrian and vehicular traffic, sidewalks, an integrated lighting system, and a 7.4-kilometer bicycle path for both recreational and practical purposes.
Summary
Dubai continues to be unstoppable in its transportation infrastructure development, taking into account not only vehicular traffic but also the needs of pedestrians and cyclists. The developments around Al Warqa and its vicinity illustrate how the city can simultaneously accelerate transportation, improve quality of life, and offer more sustainable solutions. The RTA's projects certainly contribute to making Dubai even more livable and efficient in the future.
