New Tourist Trails Unveil Dubai's Historical Markets

Dubai's past and present converge once again through an exciting development in Deira, one of the city's oldest districts. With an investment of 9.5 million dirhams from the Dubai Municipality, three new tourist pathways have been established, taking visitors on a 1.8-kilometer journey through the historic souks, or markets. The aim of the project is to preserve and highlight Dubai's cultural heritage while providing a modern and comfortable visiting experience.

Three Themed Routes in the Heart of Old Dubai

Central to the development are three key routes: one alongside the Gold Souq, one by the Al Ahmadiya School, and one near the Spice Souq. These paths connect a total of seven different traditional markets, including those selling perfumes, carpets, textiles, kitchen tools, and household items. The entire developed area spans 25,800 square meters, with over 500 shops operating in the region, marking it as one of Deira's most significant cultural and touristic renovations in recent years.

Authentic Materials for True Historical Representation

Special attention has been given to ensuring that architectural details and materials used in the restoration accurately reflect the historical character of the area. The restoration utilized sarooj, a lime-based plaster, a traditional building material of the Arab world that has shaped the architectural landscape of the region for centuries. The project also aimed to maintain the spirit of the place by restoring wooden shades, modernizing open public spaces, and reconstructing pathways.

As part of the project, three new public squares have been created, offering seating, relaxation zones, and modern community services. These areas provide not only tourists but also the local community with opportunities to connect with Dubai's rich history and living cultural heritage.

Upgraded sidewalks, shading systems, and rest areas are designed to accommodate climatic conditions while minimizing environmental impact.
