Dubai's Explosive Iftar Tradition

Cannons Signal Iftar: Dubai's Spectacular Tradition
Ramadan represents a special time for the Muslim world every year, and in Dubai, this period becomes even more spectacular with the traditional firing of iftar cannons. This year, it will be no different: on March 9th and 10th, both locals and tourists can take part in this mesmerizing event, symbolizing the spirit of Ramadan and the strength of community.
The tradition of iftar cannons
The use of iftar cannons during Ramadan in Dubai dates back more than six decades. Since the 1960s, this tradition has become an integral part of celebrating the holy month. Every day, as the sun sets and it’s time for iftar - the breaking of the fast - a cannon shot signals families and friends to gather for a meal. The beginning of Ramadan and the dawn of Eid is marked by two cannon shots, creating an even more festive atmosphere.
Where and when?
This year, several locations will offer the opportunity to witness the spectacular cannon firings. The Dubai Police have announced that on March 9th and 10th, Marsa Boulevard will be the main site where the public can safely enjoy this special moment up close. Located near Dubai Festival City, Marsa Boulevard is an ideal location for the event, offering easy access and great views.
However, the cannons won't be confined to this spot alone. The Dubai Police have stationed cannons at eight different locations, including Expo City Dubai, DAMAC Hills, Uptown Mirdif, near Burj Khalifa, JA Hatta Fort Hotel, Salt Camp located at Kite Beach, and the Dubai Real Estate Corporation (Wasl) premises. These locations offer more people the chance to be part of this tradition.
Mobile cannons on the streets
Besides the traditional sites, the Dubai Police have also deployed mobile cannons that will operate in 17 different areas. This means even more people will have the chance to hear the iftar signal, whether in the city center or in the suburbs. The use of mobile cannons also reflects that in Dubai, traditions perfectly coexist with modern technology.
Why is it worth seeing?
The firing of iftar cannons is not just a traditional event but a moment that brings the community together. During Ramadan, those fasting refrain from eating and drinking during the day, making the iftar signal a shared celebration. The sound of the cannon shots not only marks the time to break the fast but also reminds of shared faith, love, and unity.
In Dubai, this event becomes even more unique due to the city's modern aesthetic merging with traditions. The spectacular cannon firings, set against the backdrop of the city's iconic buildings and the community atmosphere, offer a magical experience.
Unity and solidarity
Ramadan isn’t just about fasting but also about selflessness, unity, and solidarity. In Dubai, this message is strongly felt as both residents and tourists participate in the festive programs. The firing of iftar cannons is a perfect occasion for everyone to pause for a moment and experience this special atmosphere.
