Dubai Road Toll Changes Impact Traffic Costs
Dubai's Road Toll System to Change on January 31 - How Does It Impact Drivers?
Dubai's road usage system, Salik, is introducing a new variable pricing system starting January 31, which sets different fees for peak hours and lower traffic periods. The aim of the new regulation is to enhance traffic efficiency and reduce congestion on the city's busiest routes.
Weekday Toll Fees
On weekdays, Salik tolls will be as follows:
a, Peak hours (6:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00): Dh6
b, Off-peak hours (10:00–16:00 and 20:00–1:00): Dh4
c, Night hours (1:00–6:00): free of charge
Sunday Differences
On Sundays – except during public holidays and major events – the fee will be a flat Dh4 all day (7:00–2:00). Usage is free at night (2:00–7:00).
No Changes at Certain Gates
It's important to note that at the Al Safa North, Al Safa South, Al Mamzar North, and Al Mamzar South gates, passing through in one direction within an hour remains free, similar to the current rules.
Current Salik Toll System
Currently, the Salik system charges a fixed fee of Dh4 every time a vehicle passes through any of Dubai's 10 toll gates. The new variable pricing system thus offers a more dynamic approach for drivers.
Changes to Parking Fees
Dubai's parking system is also being updated, with the variable parking tariff policy expected to come into effect by the end of March 2025. This change will introduce different fees during peak hours and at event locations.
Parking Fees During Peak Hours
a, Premium parking spots: Dh6/hour
b, General public parking spots: Dh4/hour
Peak hours: 8:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00.
Parking Fees During Off-Peak Hours
During off-peak hours (10:00–16:00 and 20:00–22:00), the fees remain unchanged, and parking is free during the night hours (22:00–8:00). On Sundays, parking is free all day.
Congestion Charges During Events
Starting from February 2025, congestion charges will be introduced around event zones, initially around Dubai World Trade Centre. In these areas, public paid parking fees will be Dh25/hour during major events.
What Does This Mean for Drivers?
The new regulations aim to distribute traffic more reasonably and utilize infrastructure more efficiently. Drivers who can choose flexible travel times could save significantly on costs. Changes in parking fees also aim to moderate peak period traffic, while increased fees around event locations encourage the use of alternative transportation methods.
This dynamic approach is expected to positively impact Dubai's traffic system while introducing new considerations for planning car travel.
