Dubai, a global model for modern urban development and sustainability, has once again set a new direction for improving the quality of urban life. The city's leadership announced plans to transform key residential areas into car-free zones to promote pedestrian and bicycle traffic, increase green spaces, and improve the quality of life for residents. This initiative, known as the Super Block, is part of Dubai's 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to create a greener and more sustainable urban environment in the long run.
The essence of the Super Block initiative
Under the Super Block program, residential areas such as Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and the Al Quoz Creative Zone will be transformed into pedestrian and bicycle-friendly zones where public spaces will be used for community and recreational purposes. The project aims to increase the proportion of green spaces, foster social connections, and create a healthier, more livable urban environment.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defense, announced the initiative on the X platform (formerly Twitter). He emphasized that the project aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which seeks to improve residents' quality of life through infrastructure development and the creation of a sustainable urban environment.
Steps towards a greener Dubai
The Super Block initiative is just one of many green projects that Dubai has announced in recent years. The city leadership is making significant efforts in sustainability and environmental protection. For example, in 2024, 216,500 trees were planted in Dubai, representing a 17% increase from 2023. This translates to an average of 600 trees planted every day over the past year. Additionally, the area of green spaces expanded by 391.5 hectares, a 57% increase compared to the previous year.
The city's municipality also planted 5.3 million ornamental plants and flowers and replaced 45 million seasonal flowers throughout the year. These efforts not only enhance the city's aesthetic appeal but also contribute to combating climate change.
Therme Dubai and welfare strategies
Apart from the Super Block initiative, Dubai has announced other ambitious projects aimed at improving the quality of life for residents. Under the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, the city unveiled plans for the world's tallest wellness center, Therme Dubai. This project, with a 2 billion dirham investment, will be constructed in Zabeel Park and open its doors in 2028. The new attraction will feature an interactive park and the world's largest indoor botanical garden, drawing 1.7 million visitors annually.
Creating a pedestrian-friendly city
In addition to expanding green spaces, Dubai is making significant strides in promoting pedestrian traffic. The city's leadership announced the Dubai Walk plan, which aims to create a 6,500-kilometer modern pedestrian network. This network will span 160 areas and include the construction of 3,300 kilometers of new pedestrian routes and the renovation of 2,300 kilometers of existing routes by 2040. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions, promote soft transportation modes, and make exploring the city more enjoyable.
