Dubai unveils the "Basma" award: Innovation and Intellectual Property Protection in Focus
Dubai, a global hub for creativity and innovation, has broken new ground by presenting the "Basma" (Imprint) award. This new initiative not only encourages creativity and innovation but also places significant emphasis on the protection of intellectual property rights. The award is divided into two categories: one for the general public and another for students and university attendees. Aligned with the "Year of Giving" objectives of the United Arab Emirates, the aim of the award is to promote skills development, talent nurturing, and the spread of innovation across all fields.
Intellectual Property Protection and the Fight Against Counterfeits
Behind the "Basma" award stands the Dubai Customs, which places great emphasis on protecting intellectual property rights and fighting counterfeits. The director of the Intellectual Property Rights Department of Dubai Customs highlighted the organization's commitment to protecting the rights of trademark owners, innovators, and creators. Counterfeits not only cause economic damage but also pose health and environmental risks. Thus, the aim of the award is to raise awareness of these dangers and inspire younger generations to actively participate in increasing awareness.
Dubai Customs regularly organizes workshops, competitions, and campaigns that highlight the harmful effects of counterfeits. These events not only demonstrate the negative impacts on health and the economy but also emphasize the importance of protecting intellectual property rights.
Categories and Participants of the "Basma" Award
The award's two main categories allow both the general public and students to participate in the creative process. The Chief Awareness and Education Officer of the Intellectual Property Rights Department stated that the award has been expanded this year with a new category, in which the general public can also participate. This new category aligns with the "Year of Giving" objectives of the United Arab Emirates and aims to provide everyone the opportunity to engage in innovation and to enhance awareness of intellectual property protection.
According to the award's criteria, the best awareness initiatives will be recognized. There are three categories:
Video Campaign: Participants can create a video campaign to be displayed on a social media platform, with the content and platform approved by the award organizers.
Article or Short Story: In the second category, participants can write an article or short story about the societal impact of intellectual property, and the necessity of protecting creativity and innovation.
Podcast: The task in the third category is to create a podcast that presents the issues of intellectual property rights in an innovative and captivating manner.
Professional Support and Recognition
Applicants can also enjoy the support of experts working in the field of intellectual property rights protection. The deadline for submissions is February 17, while content review and approval will take place between March 3 and 25. The winners will be recognized on April 26 at the ceremony for World Intellectual Property Day and will receive monetary rewards.
