One of the latest milestones in this ambition is the Harbour West Car Park at Dubai Harbour, where drivers can pay parking fees directly via their Salik account.

The new system eliminates the need for parking tickets, cash payments, and traditional payment machines. Drivers will no longer need to pull a ticket upon entry, queue at a machine, or deal with settling the parking fee before leaving. The system automatically recognizes the vehicle, handling the fee through the linked Salik account.

A New Role for the Salik System

Salik is primarily known as Dubai's electronic toll collection system. Gates placed on the city's major routes allow drivers to pass through toll sections without stopping. The system automatically identifies the Salik tag on the vehicle, then deducts the toll from its linked account balance.

Recent developments, however, show that Salik's role is expanding beyond traditional toll collection. The company is gradually evolving into a broader mobility and digital payment platform. The parking solution introduced at Dubai Harbour is one of the newest examples of this development.

The system's essence is that the same digital account used by drivers to settle tolls can also be utilized to pay for parking fees. This can significantly simplify the daily routine for car commuters, as they won't need to download separate apps, create new registrations, or input additional payment information for each parking garage.

Nine-Story Parking Facility Built at Dubai Harbour

The Harbour West Car Park is a nine-story, multi-level garage offering a total of 845 parking spaces. The facility spans a total built-up area of 31,487 square meters and provides both traditional covered levels and rooftop parking spaces.

The parking garage primarily serves visitors to Dubai Harbour, but thanks to its location, it can also ease access to several surrounding city districts and popular destinations. Nearby areas include Dubai Marina, Marina Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai Media City, and Dubai Internet City, making the new facility important not only for those arriving at the port.

This part of Dubai experiences particularly high traffic on weekends, evenings, and during major events and tourist seasons. Finding parking spaces can be time-consuming, while congestion can form at parking garage exits if drivers need to handle tickets or wait at payment machines.

The capacity of 845 spaces is a significant development, and the digital payment system can further enhance the parking garage's efficiency.

Automatic Entry and Easier Departure

One of the biggest advantages of Salik-based parking is the acceleration of entry and exit processes. In traditional parking garages, drivers usually have to stop at a barrier, request a ticket, then find a payment machine at the end of parking. After this, they must queue again at the exit to verify that the parking fee has been paid.

A significant portion of these steps is eliminated with the new solution. Vehicle identification happens automatically, and the system records entry and exit times. The fee is settled through the Salik account, removing the need for paper or magnetic stripe tickets.

Maintenance of ticket dispensing machines, cash handling, and issues related to parking tickets can all be reduced. According to the agreement, the collaboration will take effect on July 13. From that date, Salik's digital payment solution could ensure automatic settlement of parking fees at the Harbour West Car Park.

Parkonic, a company specializing in parking solutions, is also involved in designing the technological system. During development, the garage entry system, vehicle identification, parking time calculation, and the Salik payment infrastructure must be interconnected.

For users, the complex back-end system is expected to result in a simpler parking experience. The driver enters, parks, and at the end of the visit leaves, with the fee paid without a separate process.

Visitor Experience Could Improve Too

Dubai Harbour is not just a port but a complex leisure and tourism destination. The area includes yacht harbors, event venues, catering facilities, and beach programs. Many visitors arrive by personal vehicle, so parking quality directly affects the overall visitor experience.

A pleasant program can easily be overshadowed if a long search for parking is needed upon arrival, or there is a significant queue for payment upon departure. The new parking garage's larger capacity and automatic payment can address this issue.

The system can be particularly beneficial for those who regularly commute on Dubai's roads and already have an active Salik account. They don't need to learn to use a completely new service, but instead, their existing traffic account gains a new function.
