Dubai Grows Green Spaces by 57% in 2024

Dubai's Green Initiative: 600 Trees Daily for 57% More Green Areas
Dubai achieved remarkable results in sustainability and urban aesthetics in 2024 by expanding the emirate's green spaces by 391.5 hectares, marking a 57% increase compared to the previous year. According to Dubai Municipality, a total of 216,500 trees were planted throughout the year, equivalent to 600 trees per day. This number represents a 17% increase from 2023 figures, showcasing Dubai's commitment to sustainable development.
Key Achievements of Dubai's Green Project
As part of Dubai's greening projects, the Dubai Municipality planted 5.3 million flowering and ornamental plants, and replaced 45 million seasonal flowers across the city over three seasons. Among the planted species were many native ones such as Ghaf, Sidr, and Samar, which adapt well to local environmental conditions. Additionally, ornamental trees like neem, olive, Indian jasmine, and various palm species were also planted.
Among the evergreen trees, special species like Washingtonia, Bismarckia, Poinciana, Pongamia, and Acacia franciana were included, further enriching the emirate's green canopy.
Greening Urban Areas and Main Roads
Under the Dubai Green Project, 165 urban beautification projects were implemented, affecting residential and urban areas, major and minor roads, bridge crossroads, public parks, family spaces, and recreational facilities. The affected roads and areas include notable locations such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Jamayel Street, Al Khawaneej Street, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street.
Further significant developments took place on Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Road, Al Ittihad Road, Dubai–Al Ain Road, and internal roads in various residential areas like Al Mizhar, Al Barsha, Nad Al Hammar, Nad Al Sheba, Mirdif, Abu Hail, and Oud Al Muteena.
The Aim and Sustainability Aspects of the Greening Projects
The Director General of Community Facilities at Dubai Municipality stated:
"The aim of the city beautification and greening projects by Dubai Municipality is to enhance Dubai's sustainability and aesthetic appeal. Through our innovative and sustainable urban planning practices, we strive to balance modern agricultural methods with the emirate's unique character. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors, increase green space ratios, improve air and soil quality, mitigate the effects of climate change, and preserve biodiversity."
Why is Greening Important for Dubai?
Dubai's climate is arid and desert-like, making the development of green areas crucial not only for aesthetics but also for environmental protection. The new greening projects contribute to temperature reduction, air quality improvement, and the enhancement of urban livability. The project aims for Dubai to remain one of the world's most attractive cities, building its modern infrastructure on sustainability and ecological balance.
Summary
Dubai's greening program achieved impressive outcomes in 2024, significantly enhancing both the city’s aesthetics and sustainability. The planting of 600 trees daily, expansion of green spaces, and urban beautification projects all illustrate that Dubai continues to lead in sustainable urbanization. These developments not only improve the quality of life for residents and visitors but also bolster long-term resilience against environmental challenges.
