Dubai Expands Blue Line, Inducing Traffic Shifts

Dubai Metro Blue Line Expansion: Traffic Restrictions in Mirdif Area Due to Construction
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) issued a warning to commuters about traffic diversions in the Mirdif district related to the construction of the Blue Line metro. The affected areas are significant parts of the city, and the authority urges drivers to plan their routes in advance and use alternative roads.
Traffic Restrictions in Mirdif
Due to ongoing construction, the roundabout between 5th and 8th streets near City Centre Mirdif will be closed. Traffic will be diverted from 5th Street to 8th Street towards the shopping center, and from 8th Street to 5th Street towards Algeria Street. Alternative parking entrance will be provided for visitors to the shopping center, while residents will navigate through a U-turn near Ghoroob Square.
The Blue Line: The Future of Transportation in Dubai
The Dubai Metro Blue Line is one of the largest and most spectacular expansions of the city's transportation system. The new line stretches 30 kilometers with 14 stops, including three hub stations that provide connections to the existing red and green metro lines. The project aims to transport 200,000 passengers daily by 2030, and reach 320,000 passengers by 2040.
Plans indicate that the new line will be capable of transporting 46,000 passengers per hour in both directions, and is expected to reduce traffic congestion by 20% on the affected routes. Travel time across the entire line will range between 10 and 25 minutes, significantly shortening intra-city travel.
Connecting Nine Key City Districts
The Blue Line connects nine major urban areas:
Mirdif
Al Warqa
International City 1 and 2
Dubai Silicon Oasis
Academic City
Ras Al Khor Industrial Area
Dubai Creek Harbour
Dubai Festival City
These areas are home to more than a million residents, making the metro line a key element in Dubai's 2040 urban development master plan.
Iconic Stations and World Records
One of the highlights of the Blue Line will be a metro station that, at 74 meters high, will be the tallest metro station in the world. Located at Dubai Creek Harbour, the station will feature a gold cylindrical design with ornate facades, offering commercial and investment opportunities.
The new line will also feature the largest underground hub station, occupying more than 44,000 square meters, and capable of handling up to 350,000 passengers daily.
Sustainability and Innovation
The project is the first transport investment in Dubai fully compliant with green building standards, achieving a Platinum level environmental certification. As part of the integrated transport system, stations will include bus terminals, taxi stands, bicycle and electric scooter parking, and accessible parking spots.
Construction is being carried out by three international companies, including Turkish and Chinese firms, with a total investment cost of 20.5 billion dirhams expected to generate over 56 million dirhams in profit.
