Dubai Declares Holiday for Islamic New Year

Three-Day Weekend Ahead: Dubai Declares Public Holiday for Islamic New Year
In celebration of the Hijri, or Islamic New Year, a public holiday has been announced in the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai's government institutions, on Friday, June 27. As a result of this decision, public sector employees can look forward to a three-day weekend, as work will resume on Monday, June 30.
Who is Affected by the Public Holiday?
The announcement applies to government employees, including state offices, institutions, and ministries. However, exceptions exist for organizations where employees work in shifts or provide essential public services and are responsible for operating critical facilities. These organizations can independently arrange duty rosters to ensure continuity of service.
Why is June 27 the Holiday?
The Islamic New Year, marking the start of the Hijri year, falls on the first day of the month of Muharram, which varies according to the lunar calendar. This year, the start of the year 1447 AH falls on June 27, as the official list of holidays for 2025 previously published also included. This date has been confirmed by both the federal government and Dubai authorities.
Private Sector Employees Also Get a Day Off
Not only state but also private sector workers will benefit from the Friday holiday. This decision allows those who receive rest days on both Saturday and Sunday (for example, those on a Sunday-weekly cycle) to enjoy a refreshing long three-day weekend.
What Does This Mean for Residents?
The three-day break offers a perfect opportunity for short travel, family activities, or simple relaxation. Given that another long weekend is coming after the Eid Al Adha celebration, many might consider back-to-back travel opportunities.
