Discover UAE's Best Winter Camping Spots

Winter Camping in the UAE: 8 Sites for the Season
As cooler weather arrives in the United Arab Emirates, the deserts, mountains, and valleys reveal a new side to nature lovers. This is the time when the scorching heat recedes and is replaced by pleasantly cool mornings and starry nights. Those who spend the rest of the year in air-conditioned rooms and cars can finally step into nature – and pitch their tents in the UAE's most beautiful locations.
This season is ideal for conversations around a campfire, sipping kadak tea under the stars, or just taking a break from the digital world. Below, we introduce eight diverse and weather-friendly spots where you can have a memorable camping experience.
Jebel Jais – The Country's Highest Point
The UAE's tallest peak, Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, standing at nearly 1,900 meters, is not only the most spectacular but also the coolest camping spot in the country. Morning temperatures can drop to around 9 °C, while during the day, visitors can enjoy a pleasant 20 °C.
The road leading here is fully paved, making it easily accessible by any vehicle up to the viewing terraces. It’s advisable to arrive early if you want to secure the best spots for camping.
Jebel Hafeet – A Comfortable Escape from the City
Not far from the city of Al Ain lies Jebel Hafeet, a popular destination for residents of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. While not as tall as Jais, it still offers a pleasantly cool retreat: temperatures can be 14 °C in the early morning and up to 27 °C during the day.
The winding, well-maintained route offers easy driving, with several designated picnic areas available. Weekends are busier, so it’s worth arriving early if you crave tranquility.
Jebel Yibir – The Hidden Gem
This lesser-known but spectacular peak is also in the Ras Al Khaimah region. The terrain here is much steeper, with some sections only accessible by 4x4 vehicles. Temperatures range from 14 to 30 °C, ideal for overnight camping.
If you love a more adventurous approach, Jebel Yibir is an excellent choice – especially if you are motivated by the closeness of nature and the challenges.
Al Suhub Rest House – Modern Resting Spot in the Sharjah Mountains
Located at about 600 meters altitude, not far from Sharjah, the Al Suhub Rest House is becoming an increasingly popular destination within the region. The early morning temperature of 16 °C becomes pleasantly comfortable by evening, while the day’s 31 °C is not uncomfortably hot.
The area is easily accessible by a paved road, making it ideal for those who don't want to sacrifice the comforts of civilization.
Wadi Shawka – Hikers' Paradise
For those who love gorges and hiking trails, Wadi Shawka is an unmissable destination. It offers the classic UAE camping experience with gravel grounds, mountain views, and easy hiking paths. Nighttime temperatures of 18 °C and daytime 28 °C make it possible to enjoy outdoor activities all day long.
Hatta – Where Mountains and Lakes Meet
Not far from the Dubai border, the town of Hatta sits at an altitude of around 300–400 meters above sea level. Daytime temperatures of 30 °C and nighttime 20 °C make it ideal for camping, especially around the Hatta Dam or Wadi Hub.
Routes leading to the region are completely paved, so no special vehicle is required. However, if you are looking for more remote locations deep within the valley, a 4x4 vehicle is advisable.
Hanging Gardens – Green Oasis Near Kalba
If you prefer green vegetation to dunes, then the Hanging Gardens near Kalba may be the ideal choice. The morning temperature of 19 °C and daytime 31 °C strike a balance between cool nights and pleasant daytime walks.
The area is easily approached, with well-maintained roads, and can be easily reached with a conventional vehicle.
Al Qudra Desert – Quick Escape from the City
Al Qudra desert is one of the most popular weekend destinations for Dubai residents, offering a balance of proximity, nature, and tranquility. Morning temperatures of 22 °C and daytime 32 °C provide the ideal combination for a quick stargazing night, a friendly barbecue, or just a bit of relaxation away from the city hustle.
Since the terrain is flat and easily accessible, a 4x4 is not necessary unless you stray off the designated paths.
Important Considerations Before You Set Off
Before setting off, always check the weather forecast, especially during rainy periods when the wadis can become dangerous. Bring sufficient drinking water, food, as well as warm clothing and sleeping bags designed for at least 5–10 °C temperatures. Only light campfires in designated fire rings or areas surrounded by sand, and always arrive in daylight to safely set up your tent.
What to Avoid
Do not leave trash behind, avoid playing loud music at night, and do not feed the wildlife – these basic rules help ensure that nature remains enjoyable for everyone.
Summary
The UAE’s diverse landscapes take on new meaning in winter: mountains, deserts, and valleys are not only spectacular but comfortably cool, too. Whether it’s a family picnic or a multi-day camping trip, the current season offers the perfect opportunity to break away from everyday life and reconnect with nature – all just hours away from the hustle of Dubai.
