However, this year, the rental prices for tents at the popular Half Desert location have significantly increased, leaving many visitors surprised and disappointed. With the hourly rate jumping from Dh100 to Dh300, many are being forced to reevaluate their weekend plans.
The Half Desert: A Favorite Winter Escape
Half Desert, located at the intersection of Al Ain Road and Emirates Road, has been a beloved winter destination for locals for years. As the cooler weather arrives, hundreds of tents are pitched in the area where families and friends can relax, grill, and enjoy evenings under the open sky. However, this year's price increase has been a shock for many.
An Iranian expatriate recalls paying only Dh100 per hour last December for a tent equipped with a sound system, grill, and water. Returning this year, they were shocked to find the same tent now costs Dh300 per hour. "After some negotiation, I managed to lower the price to Dh200, but it still feels excessive. I understand the demand is high, but triple the price in just a few months is too much," they said.
The Impact of Price Increases on Visitors
Another local resident, who regularly visits the Half Desert with family and friends, shared their experience. "We've been coming here in winter for years to unwind and enjoy quality time together. The experience has always been wonderful, but with the rising prices, we now find it harder to visit as often as we used to," they said.
Khan mentioned that their group of ten had to split the costs to make it affordable. "We used to stay for hours without worrying about expenses. Now even a few hours strain our budget," he added.
Why Have Prices Risen?
According to tent caretakers, the price increase is due to rising demand. Abdul Rahim Akhtar, responsible for several tents in the area, explained that a Dh300 hourly rate was originally set for this year. "In October and November, visitor numbers were low, so we offered discounts. As the winter peak season arrived in January, demand increased, and we are now charging the full rate," he said.
Another tent caretaker highlighted the difference between weekdays and weekends. "On weekdays, there are hardly any guests, so we try to attract them with prices ranging from Dh50 to Dh100. On weekends, the demand is much higher, so we charge the full rate to compensate for quieter days," they explained.
Searching for Alternatives
Despite the price hike, many continue to visit Half Desert as it offers a unique desert camping experience. However, more people are looking for alternative locations where they can relax at a better price. "Lately, we've been exploring the outskirts of Sharjah and Ajman where camping is free," they said.
