Catch an Autonomous Taxi in Abu Dhabi

Self-Driving Taxi in Abu Dhabi? Here's How to Ride
The introduction of autonomous vehicles (AV) is increasingly becoming a reality in the United Arab Emirates. The first self-driving taxis are now available in Abu Dhabi, though they currently operate only in limited areas, making each ride somewhat of a gamble. The service was launched as part of a partnership in December 2023, collaborating with Uber and WeRide, supported by the Abu Dhabi Mobility.
Where Do the Self-Driving Taxis Operate?
WeRide's autonomous vehicles currently operate exclusively in designated parts of Abu Dhabi. This means that passengers are not guaranteed such a vehicle will arrive for them — the experience largely relies on chance. The system is designed so that if a route falls within the AV zone and such a vehicle is available, it is automatically selected.
How to Increase Your Chances
Within the Uber app, a simple setting can help those eager to experience a ride in a self-driving taxi. Enabling the option related to autonomous vehicles under Settings > Travel Preferences can increase the likelihood of being picked up by a WeRide-operated vehicle during an UberX or Uber Comfort trip.
It's important to note that currently, passengers cannot specifically request an autonomous vehicle. However, if one is available and the route is suitable, Uber will automatically pair the passenger with the AV. The passenger can then decide whether to accept the vehicle. If declined, another vehicle with a traditional driver will be provided at no extra charge.
How Much Does It Cost?
Traveling in a self-driving vehicle does not cost more than a traditional UberX or Uber Comfort ride. There’s no special pricing, making the experience affordably accessible to those who are fortunate enough.
Safety First
The greatest challenge in developing AVs is ensuring safety, particularly when transporting people. For this reason, every self-driving taxi in Abu Dhabi currently carries a trained safety operator who oversees operations and intervenes if necessary. This step ensures the safety of both passengers and pedestrians.
The plan is for this transitional phase to prepare for fully driverless commercial operations, expected to launch later this year.
Dubai is also joining in the developments. In the first phase, more than 60 vehicles will map routes and gather data, with testing possibly commencing in up to 65 designated zones in the second phase.
What Technology is Behind It?
AVs are equipped with the most advanced sensors and technologies: radars, cameras, and lidar systems help the vehicle accurately perceive its environment and navigate through various traffic situations safely. The goal is for the vehicles to minimize human error-related accidents, thereby making roads safer.
The technology is under continuous testing, with Uber working closely with UAE authorities to meet regulatory expectations with all systems.
Worldwide Expansion
The global advancement of AVs is no longer in the future but is happening now. Uber’s goal is not to develop its own vehicles but to realize the self-driving future with the help of strategic partners. The United Arab Emirates is the first international market where Uber has launched its AV project outside the United States.
Currently, they are collaborating with 14 technology partners worldwide, not only in mobility but also in delivery and freight.
Summary
Self-driving taxis are no longer a sci-fi element but a reality running on the streets of Abu Dhabi. Although they are currently available in limited areas and numbers, with a simple setting, anyone can increase their chances of experiencing this technological breakthrough. With safety in mind, Uber is gradually introducing the service, which will also soon appear in Dubai.
