Can UAE Temperatures Surpass 50°C?

The Period of Al Mirzam in UAE: Can Temperatures Reach 50°C?
As August begins, the heat in the United Arab Emirates escalates to another level: the period of Al Mirzam has started. This is one of the hottest and driest phases of the year, marked by the appearance of the Al Mirzam star – also known as Sirius – on the eastern horizon. During the period from July 29 to August 10, temperatures can regularly reach, and even exceed, 50°C, further intensified by the desert samum wind.
The Start of the Hottest Days
Residents of the Emirates are accustomed to the summer heat, but the Al Mirzam period is distinctive. The heatwave that occurs at this time is also referred to in Arab culture as Waghrat al-Qayz – the “raging summer” period. The atmospheric conditions are characterized by intense drought, dusty winds, and temperature peaks. According to the National Meteorology Center, for instance, on July 31, a reading of 50.6°C was recorded at one monitoring station, and this is not the peak yet.
The samum winds – hot, dry desert air movements – exacerbate the situation further, as they not only enhance the feeling of heat but also reduce visibility, often bringing dust storms.
Why is this Period Special?
The Al Mirzam period is not just a meteorological phenomenon but is deeply rooted in Arab culture as well. People of old – sailors, shepherds, and farmers – used to link the appearance of the star to the transition of seasons and the agricultural and fishing cycles.
Sailors considered this the best time for pearl diving in the depths of the Arabian Gulf. Farmers began the date harvest during this period, as the dry heat facilitated the ripening of the fruits, with moisture flowing northward into the region.
Spectacle and Astronomy
Al Mirzam is not only an indicator of heat – it also brings an exciting period for astronomy enthusiasts. During this time, several constellations besides the Sirius star can be observed on clear nights, such as Gemini or Pisces. The term “dog days” referring to this period dates back to Roman and Greek times. They believed that the appearance of Sirius accompanied the rising daytime temperatures – exhaustion, lethargy, and even animal weakness were common during these days.
Expert Recommendations
Authorities and meteorologists warn the public to avoid outdoor activities during the midday and afternoon hours, especially from morning until sunset. It is worth staying in cool, well-ventilated areas and ensuring proper hydration. Heatstroke, dehydration, and sunstroke can pose serious health risks, especially for the elderly and children.
Summary
The Al Mirzam period is a yearly reminder of the extreme challenges posed by the Arab summer. The astronomical phenomena, historical significance, and climatic characteristics make these few weeks a unique period in the United Arab Emirates. Anyone traveling or living here during this time must not only take care of sunscreen and water intake but also be aware of nature's signals – whether observing the stars or the hot dust cloud covering the sky.
