Avoid Hefty Fines at Abu Dhabi's Darb Gates

Do Not Stop at Darb Gates – Hefty Fines Await in Abu Dhabi
The Abu Dhabi police have issued a renewed warning: stopping in front of Darb toll gates is illegal and dangerous, and authorities impose a Dh500 fine on those who obstruct traffic this way. Video footage released by the city's traffic police shows several drivers stopping on the roadway or in the emergency lane minutes before the start of the toll-free period to avoid the fee. This practice is not only unlawful but also poses serious risks of accidents to other road users.
What is the Darb System?
The Darb toll gate system was introduced in Abu Dhabi in January 2021 with the aim to reduce downtown congestion and encourage the use of public transport. Toll collection periods are from 7 to 9 AM and 5 to 7 PM, during which Dh4 is charged per passage. Outside these periods, as well as on Fridays and official holidays, the system is free to use.
Dangerous Behavior on the Roads
Many exploit the system by waiting until the toll-free period starts, leading to illegal stopping, typically in the emergency lane. The police highlight that this practice is particularly dangerous because:
it hinders the flow of traffic,
it disrupts traffic,
it increases the risk of accidents, especially during peak hours.
Such violations result in a Dh500 fine. Additionally, the authorities have highlighted other common infractions:
Sudden lane changing: Dh1,000 fine + 4 black points,
Unauthorized use of bus lanes or stopping in bus parking: Dh400 fine.
Why is it Important to Follow the Rules?
Traffic rules aim to maintain safety on the roads, not merely to collect fines. Illegal stopping, waiting in the emergency lane, or changing lanes without prior signaling endangers others. Authorities stress that tricks to avoid tolls are unacceptable, both morally and legally.
What Can Drivers Do?
Plan ahead: If you want to avoid tolls, choose an alternative route or travel during the toll-free period—but never stop illegally.
Use public transport: Abu Dhabi has a well-developed bus network, one of the goals of the Darb system was to promote this.
Observe the rules: always check current traffic regulations and adhere to road signs.
Conclusion
Abu Dhabi clearly states: evading the Darb system is not worth the risk. Illegal stops, sudden lane changes, or unauthorized lane usage contribute to increasing accident risks. Authorities aim to create a sustainable, safe, and seamless traffic environment—which is a responsibility shared by all drivers.
