Air India Supports Families After Fatal Crash

Air India: Compensation Payouts and Memorial Fund to Honor AI171 Disaster Victims
Air India has announced that it has begun issuing interim compensation payments to the families of the victims of the tragic AI171 flight accident. According to the airline's statement, so far 147 passengers, as well as the families of 19 individuals who lost their lives at the crash site, received an immediate livelihood assistance amount equivalent to 2.5 million Indian rupees each. This amount serves as an advance, which will be counted towards the final compensation later.
The documentation for the families of the remaining 52 victims has already been verified, allowing them to shortly receive the interim support. Air India emphasized that the process is not yet complete and that they will continuously update the public on further developments.
Remembrance and Long-term Support
The incident has brought not only financial support but also moral responsibility. Air India's parent company, Tata Group, has established the AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust, which provides a one-time grant (ex gratia payment) equivalent to 10 million rupees to each of the deceased victims' families. The aim of the fund goes beyond assisting immediate relatives: it also supports individuals involved in post-disaster rescue operations, healthcare, and community aid.
Infrastructure Restoration and Community Commitment
The reconstruction of B.J. Medical College's student dormitory—damaged during the accident—is part of the fund's activities. This move reflects a commitment to healing not just direct losses, but also the associated social wounds resulting from the tragedy.
The Trust additionally aims to support healthcare workers, disaster responders, and members of official bodies who assisted with extraordinary efforts following the accident—often at the risk of their personal mental and physical health.
Air India's Message
The airline expressed its deep sympathy to all affected families, assuring them of its long-term support during this painful period. Air India stated that the matter is still in progress, and further information about the advancement of the support and compensation process will be disclosed later.
