Abu Dhabi's Crackdown on Noisy Vehicles

Driving a Noisy Vehicle? Abu Dhabi Cracks Down
With the onset of cooler months, Abu Dhabi's streets are once again filled with strolling families, picnicking groups, and residents seeking the tranquility of the winter season. Concurrently, however, vehicles that disturb the neighborhood's peace with excessive engine noise, unauthorized modifications, and unruly behavior are becoming more frequent. The Abu Dhabi police have made it clear: they have zero tolerance for any driver who intentionally uses a loud or disruptive vehicle, especially near residential and family camping areas.
Engine Noise is More Than an Annoyance
Abu Dhabi authorities have emphasized that such behavior is not only disruptive but can also have serious mental and health consequences. Loud engines and nighttime street races can provoke anxiety, panic, and tension among the residents – particularly children, the elderly, and the sick.
In recent years, it has become increasingly common for some young drivers to deliberately modify their vehicles to make the engine sound as loud and conspicuous as possible. This often occurs in places where residents wish to relax, such as sandy areas, near campsites, or in residential neighborhoods. According to Abu Dhabi police, "enjoyment of the winter season should not come at the community's tranquility expense."
Harsh Penalties Await Offenders
The police have warned that all violators will be strictly sanctioned. Anyone driving a vehicle that makes excessive noise can expect a fine of 2,000 dirhams and 12 traffic penalty points under Article 20 of the Road and Traffic Law. Those who perform unauthorized modifications on the vehicle's engine or chassis also face a 1,000 dirham fine, 12 points, and up to 30 days of vehicle impoundment.
Furthermore, under the law introduced in 2020, a 10,000 dirham fee must be paid to release any irregularly modified vehicle from impoundment. If this amount is not settled within three months, the vehicle may be auctioned publicly.
Specific Rules for Motorcyclists
The police have specifically highlighted that motorcyclists are also required to avoid making noise, especially in sandy areas and near family campsites. Modified motorcycles may only be used on public roads with official permits – illegal modifications attract the same penalties as for cars.
Online Management Through the TAMM System
If a vehicle is impounded in Abu Dhabi, the situation can now be conveniently handled online. The owner can log in through the official tamm.abudhabi website, which is accessible with a UAE Pass account, or even a phone number or email.
On the homepage, choose the "Drive & Transport" menu, then click the "Fines & Violations" section on the left side. Within this, the "Release Impounded Vehicle Certificate" service can be accessed, allowing submission of the request with the license plate or driving license details. The system sends feedback via SMS or email about the application's status.
Besides online options, the police can also be contacted personally, but it is recommended to coordinate with them in advance by phone or email to clarify the steps to be taken.
Community Peace Above All
Abu Dhabi authorities clearly prioritize community peace and security. The campaign against noisy vehicles is part of a broader effort to maintain the city's livability and tranquility. Therefore, the warning is not just about punishment but also about sending a message to drivers: the foundation of social coexistence is mutual respect, even on the roads.
Residents are encouraged to report disruptive vehicles at the phone number 999 and help maintain the calm environment that Abu Dhabi residents and visitors expect, whether it's night-time rest or weekend desert relaxation.
Final Thoughts
When modifying and using vehicles, not only the driving experience but also the tranquility of our surroundings must be considered. Abu Dhabi's example clearly shows that the cities of the future will stand out not only for their technological advancement but also for preserving community harmony. For those who live or drive in this city, the message is clear: drive responsibly and respect those living around you.
