Abu Dhabi Stresses: Make Way for Emergency!

Give Way to Emergency Vehicles – Abu Dhabi Launches Six-Month Campaign
The United Arab Emirates is renowned for the majority of its road users respecting the right of way for emergency vehicles. When sirens blare and blue and red lights flash, drivers instinctively pull over to clear the path for ambulances, police cars, or fire trucks rushing to emergencies. Despite this, the authorities in Abu Dhabi have initiated a six-month reminder campaign titled "Don't Hesitate – Give Way Immediately."
Why Was the Campaign Launched?
The campaign aims to reinforce traffic safety culture and make drivers aware that every second counts. The speed at which emergency teams reach the site of an accident, fire, or urgent medical situation can save lives. The campaign not only highlights the rules but also emphasizes that residents have a responsibility in creating safety.
What Are the Consequences of Not Giving Way?
Drivers who fail to give priority to emergency vehicles face a fine of 3,000 dirhams, six demerit points, and a possible 30-day vehicle impoundment. If someone obstructs fire trucks near warehouses or industrial facilities, penalties can soar to 50,000 dirhams. Those who impede emergency operations in adverse weather conditions, such as storms or heavy rain, are warned of additional penalties of 1,000 dirhams, four black points, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment.
Statistics in the Spotlight
According to the Ministry of Interior, there were 325 accidents nationwide due to failure to give way. Of these, 160 occurred in Dubai, 107 in Abu Dhabi, 31 in Ajman, 17 in Sharjah, 5 in Ras Al Khaimah, 3 in Umm Al Quwain, and 2 in Fujairah. These numbers underscore the importance of continuous awareness efforts.
What to Do When an Emergency Vehicle Approaches?
Keep noise levels low in the vehicle to hear the siren.
Do not panic, stay alert, and avoid distractions.
Slow down, signal, and pull to the right.
Avoid sudden braking, do not block the road or intersection.
You must give way to an emergency vehicle even at a green light.
Check for additional emergency vehicles before merging back.
What to Observe Upon Reaching a Rescue Scene?
Slow down and watch the rescue operations.
Keep the route clear for additional arriving emergency vehicles.
Follow the instructions of police or traffic controllers.
Do not gawk or record footage.
What Never to Do:
Do not stop or drive on the hard shoulder.
Do not overtake emergency vehicles or follow closely behind them.
Do not speed up in an attempt to "help" them.
Do not run a red light to make way.
Summary
The Abu Dhabi police campaign aims to preserve the reputation of being one of the safest cities worldwide. Remember, a single simple action of pulling over to the side of the road can save a life. Following traffic rules is not just an obligation; it is a human responsibility.
