Why Fresh Seafood is Costlier in UAE?
The Rising Fish Prices in the UAE – Why is Fresh Seafood Costlier?
In recent weeks, shoppers in the markets of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have experienced significant price increases, particularly for fish and seafood. While prices have noticeably risen in the markets of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, traders in the Kalba and Khor Fakkan areas have mostly kept prices stable. This discrepancy can be attributed to several factors, including the effects of current regional conflicts, which hinder fishing boats from setting out and reduce the amount of available fish.
Why is Seafood Getting Pricier?
Coastal cities in the UAE, such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have long provided the population with a wide variety of fresh seafood. However, due to the current political and economic tensions, fishing fleets are less inclined to venture into open waters, and the restriction of stocks has led to price hikes. According to fish market vendors, these tensions have not only reduced the number of ships but also the supply of fish, resulting in immediate price increases in the markets of major cities.
Differences Among UAE Markets
The price increase is not uniformly felt throughout the country. In the central markets of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, the rise in prices became apparent almost immediately. In contrast, in the fishing hubs of Kalba and Khor Fakkan, traders are currently maintaining stable prices, partly due to the strong local fishing presence and more stable supply in those markets. Such stable pricing plays a crucial role for residents in these cities, who regularly purchase fresh seafood products.
Consumer Opinions and Experiences
Muhammed Yakub, a resident of Abu Dhabi who regularly buys fresh catch from a local shopping center, also noticed the sudden price increase. "I traveled a lot last month and didn't go shopping. When I returned last week and bought seafood, I was shocked by the price increase," Yakub said. Similar to him, many consumers may have felt that the rise in seafood prices occurred swiftly and unexpectedly.
What to Expect in the Future?
Although the supply has eased in some markets, leading to a rise in prices, the UAE government is closely monitoring the situation and trying to find solutions to maintain stable prices. Local markets are expected to adapt if regional conflicts persist. Future measures affecting marine fishing in UAE cities could impact market prices, aiming to restore stability and ensure that fresh seafood products remain accessible to the population.
