UAE's New Initiative Enhances Elderly Care

New UAE Initiative Supports Elderly Care: Loan Postponement, Flexible Work, Strengthening Family Ties
The United Arab Emirates has launched a new social care program called “Barakatna”, aimed at improving the quality of life and well-being of elderly citizens, while strengthening family bonds and social solidarity. The initiative was officially announced at a ceremonial reception in Abu Dhabi during the Qasr Al Bahr council meeting.
Home Care and Housing Support
One of the key elements of the Barakatna program is to assist family members who are temporarily unable to care for their elderly parents in person. In such cases, temporary home nursing services can be accessed, ensuring that the elderly are cared for in a suitable environment, even if immediate relatives are unavailable due to other commitments or absence.
As part of the initiative, additional support is provided to those wishing to make home modifications or rehabilitate existing spaces to improve the comfort of elderly family members. This is particularly important for maintaining safe mobility and independence.
Loan Postponement and Flexible Work Conditions
To alleviate financial burdens, the program allows family members supporting elderly relatives to extend their mortgage repayment period by up to five years. This can be a significant aid for those managing both financial and caregiving responsibilities.
Additionally, the system offers flexible working options for caregiver family members. This service operates within regulated frameworks and aims to facilitate the integration of work and family obligations—especially when employees are involved in the daily care of their elderly parents.
Collaboration with the Social Sector
The program is supervised by the Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development and is implemented in collaboration with the Family Development Foundation and various other social organizations and institutions. The goal is to provide effective, well-coordinated care solutions for the elderly, ideally within a family environment that ensures stability, health, and dignity.
Social Values and Recognition
The initiative not only provides practical assistance but also holds symbolic significance: it acknowledges the contributions of older generations to the nation’s development and expresses the society's gratitude. The elderly are presented as custodians of knowledge and tradition, serving as role models for younger generations. The program highlights fundamental values—loyalty, dedication, self-sacrifice—that can be passed down through the example of older adults.
Summary
The Barakatna initiative is an excellent example of how the UAE can launch social programs that not only respond to practical needs but also reinforce deeper human and family values. Caring for the elderly is not only a duty but also an opportunity to express gratitude as a community while building a healthier, more compassionate future.
