UAE Volunteers Transform Food Waste into Hope

How Volunteers in the UAE Reduce Food Waste
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a remarkable initiative has saved and repurposed thousands of tons of food that would otherwise have gone to waste, with the help of volunteers. Under the leadership of ne’ma, the UAE National Food Waste Initiative, iftar boxes were packed for 5,000 low-income families, employing several innovative methods to decrease food waste.
Food Rescue Background
At the Emirates Foundation headquarters in Al Qana, a bustling scene reminiscent of a farmer's market unfolded. Dozens of volunteers, workers, managers, and even a young child participated in packing over 700 food boxes, delivered to low-income families. The boxes contained fresh tomatoes, zucchini, lettuce, dates, cheese, and other foods that, despite minor imperfections, were entirely edible and nutritious.
The Family Iftar Box Programme is part of the ne’ma-led Food Rescue Program, aimed at safely redistributing surplus food rather than discarding it. The initiative also involves the hospitality sector, food producers, and distributors to ensure the food reaches those who need it most. In collaboration with the Takatof organization, families in Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, Al Ain, and Sharjah benefited from the donations.
Role of Volunteers
Volunteers participated in the packaging with tremendous enthusiasm, paying attention to every detail. At one point, they had to reopen 10 boxes when they realized they forgot to include zucchini and cherry tomatoes. Some volunteers had previously participated in similar programs and were pleased to observe the operations' improvements over time.
One first-time volunteer shared that despite fearing exhaustion from fasting and working, they felt quite the opposite. They emphasized that redistributing surplus food has always been part of the local culture, and they are glad to continue this tradition.
Community Cooperation
The program attracted not only local volunteers but also international participants. An English tourist on vacation in the UAE expressed delight in participating in the initiative, giving back to the community. Another volunteer, unable to attend with their children, stressed the importance of teaching them the true meaning of Ramadan and understanding the significance of kindness and community.
Many of the families who received donations had previously benefited from them and gratefully accepted the boxes. Close cooperation between the Emirates Foundation and ne’ma ensures food is safely and efficiently delivered to those in need.
Innovative Solutions: Smart Fridges
The program not only focuses on packing iftar boxes but also employs innovative solutions to reduce food waste. Ten smart fridges have been installed across construction sites and other busy locations in the UAE, where local hotels and hospitality partners donate surplus cooked meals. These meals are packaged in compliance with health and safety standards to ensure safe consumption.
The smart fridge initiative was a success last year, with the involvement of 16 hotels distributing over 11,000 meals. This year, more meals are planned for distribution during Ramadan, contributing to the UAE's goal of reducing food waste by 50% by 2030.
The True Spirit of Ramadan
The ne’ma campaign not only aims to reduce food waste but also highlights the true meaning of Ramadan: philanthropy, reducing waste, and fostering community unity. The program's volunteers and partners demonstrate how to effectively and responsibly manage food redistribution while strengthening community bonds.
The UAE sets an example not only in economic development but also in social responsibility, and the ne’ma initiative clearly shows that reducing food waste and community cooperation can go hand in hand. During Ramadan, all these efforts take on deeper significance, emphasizing giving and unity.
