UAE Sandstorm Sparks Alerts and Safety Advice

Sandstorm and Dust Clouds in UAE: Orange and Red Alerts, Reduced Visibility
On Wednesday morning, April 16, visibility significantly decreased in various parts of the United Arab Emirates as dense dust and sand clouds swept over the country. The National Centre of Meteorology issued multiple levels of alerts, including red and orange, due to fog, strong winds, and the ensuing sandstorm.
Changing Weather with Dust and Fog
Authorities particularly warned drivers in Abu Dhabi as reduced visibility led to decreased speed limits on several road sections. Electronic display boards – for example, on the E311 road – urged commuters to reduce their speed and exercise increased caution during the sandstorm.
According to the meteorological service, partly cloudy and occasionally dusty weather is expected throughout the day. Due to moderate or brisk winds coming from the northwest, the concentration of airborne dust is expected to increase, further reducing visibility.
What to Do During a Sandstorm?
Authorities have also provided safety recommendations for drivers:
Before setting off, check if your car's lights are working correctly. Lights can save lives in poor visibility conditions.
If the weather worsens while driving, roll up the windows and turn on the air conditioning with internal air circulation. This prevents dust from entering the passenger compartment.
Slow down, especially when changing lanes or overtaking.
Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you, as sudden braking carries an increased risk of accidents at such times.
Do not use your phone or take videos while driving—these distractions can be life-threatening under dusty conditions.
Temperature and Humidity
Today, temperatures in Abu Dhabi range between 25°C and 35°C, while in Dubai, values between 28°C and 34°C are expected. At night and early Wednesday morning, air humidity increases: 30-70% in Abu Dhabi and 35-75% around Dubai. Fog or mist patches are particularly likely in northern, coastal, and inland areas.
Marine Conditions
In the Persian Gulf, sea conditions may vary from rough to very rough, while in the Gulf of Oman, mild or moderate waves are expected, with stronger waves in some areas.
Summary: Residents and visitors in the UAE should pay special attention to the weather conditions. Sandstorms not only worsen visibility but can also affect health, especially for those with respiratory issues. On such days, it is advisable to minimize outdoor activities and exercise increased caution on the roads. Following updates available on the meteorological service's website and social media can help maintain safety.
