Surf Abu Dhabi: Ride the World's Largest Wave Pool
Abu Dhabi is gearing up for a major launch with one of the world's largest wave pools opening soon. Surf Abu Dhabi, set to open in October, will offer surfers of all levels the chance to experience the thrill of ocean surfing.
The joint venture between Modon and Kelly Slater Wave Company, Surf Abu Dhabi is designed to cater to everyone - from complete beginners to experienced surfers. The pool uses cutting-edge technology to create different wave types, ensuring a surfing experience akin to the real ocean. The waves are designed to be consistent and controlled, making them perfect for skill development or just having fun.
Ryan Watkins, the general manager of the facility, spoke enthusiastically to Khaleej Times before the launch. "There will be an international surf competition at the end of September, and then we open in October,” he said. "Hudariyat Island was chosen for its reputation as a sports hub. Known for its high-quality sports facilities, this location will now also host Surf Abu Dhabi. We are proud to be here."
Open to all ages, the wave-generating facility in the UAE welcomes everyone, thanks to state-of-the-art technology that adapts waves to each person's surfing skills.
"With the amazing technology we have, we are sure to accommodate everyone - from those trying surfing for the first time to surfers wanting to improve their abilities and even train to a professional level," says Ryan Watkins, the general manager. He emphasizes that there is no age limit: “We welcome kids as young as four to former pros looking to return to the waves."
After opening, Surf Abu Dhabi will operate from Monday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and on weekends from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Visitors are advised to arrive at least an hour in advance for safety briefings and equipment preparation.
The wave pool is thoughtfully divided into zones to cater to surfers of all skill levels. The 'Beach Break' area is perfect for beginners with gentle rolling waves that help build confidence and master basic skills. It offers two types of waves: White Water, simulating a typical surf shore experience, and Green Water, providing a softer introduction to surfing techniques.
For those with some experience, the 'Cocoa Beach' zone offers waist-high slow waves, creating a safe environment for surfers to refine their skills and prepare for more challenging conditions. The 'Point Break' area is aimed at intermediate surfers with faster waves, long open wave faces, and controlled wave barrels—ideal for practicing more dynamic maneuvers.
Designed by legendary surfer Kelly Slater, the 'Kelly’s Wave' provides high-level waves with multiple barrel sections, aimed at advanced surfers looking to push their limits and refine their techniques.
For beginners, Surf Abu Dhabi offers a 'Learn to Surf' program in the Beach Break area. This 60-minute session introduces the basics of surfing, including mastering fundamental techniques, safety tips, and equipment use, all under the guidance of trained instructors.
No matter your surfing skill level, the facility aims to make surfing accessible for everyone with all-inclusive equipment rentals and professional instruction, ensuring a fun and safe experience for all.
