Moon and Merriment: Eid Al Fitr 2025

Eid Al Fitr 2025: On the Eve of a Spectacular Celebration – The Shawwal Moon Search in Dubai
Eid Al Fitr, the festival marking the end of fasting, is one of the most significant and joyous events in the Muslim world. In 2025, we again stand before exciting moments as the sighting of the new Shawwal moon will determine the start of the celebration. Residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are now called to participate in this special moon-sighting ceremony.
Date and Significance of the Moon Sighting
The UAE Fatwa Council has urged the country's Muslims to watch for the Shawwal moon on March 29, the evening of the 29th day of Ramadan. Anyone who sights the new moon must report it to the appropriate committee as a witness to validate the sighting. This moment holds not only ceremonial importance but is also crucial practically, as it marks the end of the month of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid Al Fitr.
Can It Only Be Seen with a Telescope? The Astronomical Challenges
Although moon-sighting traditionally occurs with the naked eye, according to the Dubai Astronomical Center, this will not be an easy task in 2025. Experts have shared a map showing where theoretically the moon could be sighted.
However, according to the Center:
"Sighting the moon on this day will be impossible in the eastern parts of the world, and it will not be possible in the rest of the Arab and Islamic world even with a telescope or astrophotography."
Based on astronomical calculations, Ramadan will likely last 30 days, meaning the last fast day falls on March 30, and Eid Al Fitr may begin on March 31.
Eid Holidays: A Unified Celebration in the UAE
The UAE government has already announced that Eid Al Fitr celebrations will take place from the 1st to the 3rd day of the Shawwal month (according to the Hijri calendar). The country's consistent holiday policy ensures that employees from both the public and private sectors can celebrate on the same days. This is not only favorable for workers but also helps strengthen the country's unity and festive atmosphere.
The Atmosphere of Eid Al Fitr in Dubai
Dubai has always been known for its impressive festive lights, rich traditions, and hospitable atmosphere. During Eid Al Fitr, the city's streets are filled with lights, food, and communal prayers. Families gather, exchange gifts, and prepare special dishes such as maamoul (stuffed pastries) or harees (grain and meat dish). Special promotions are expected in malls, and numerous cultural programs will embellish the celebration.
What to Do If We Cannot See the Moon?
Since moon-sighting can face technical difficulties, it is important for the Muslim community to patiently await the official announcement. The UAE authorities will definitely publish the decision, so no one needs to have doubts. Prayer and community solidarity remain the most important elements of the celebration.
