The history of the Arabic Language Centre (ALC) is not just a tale of an educational institution's evolution, but the embodiment of the life and dream of a passionate woman, Maliha Wehbe. Originating from Lebanon, Maliha's love for the Arabic language inspired the founding of the ALC, which has now been operating in Dubai for 45 years. The legacy of the institution's founder is carried forward by her son and granddaughter, dedicated to preserving the passion and knowledge of the Arabic language.
The beginning of a dream: From Beirut to Dubai
Maliha Wehbe's story began in 1968 in Beirut, where she taught diplomats and foreigners in her own home. Her passion for the Arabic language quickly became clear to her students, who not only learned the structure of the language but also explored its rich cultural heritage through her. However, due to the Lebanese civil war, in 1976, she moved with her family to the United Arab Emirates, where she continued her teaching career.
In Dubai, Maliha taught at the Dubai English Speaking School and also conducted private lessons at her home. A pivotal moment occurred when she met Mrs. Guillmard, the wife of the then CEO of the Dubai World Trade Centre, who was also a fan of the Arabic language. This acquaintance led to the founding of the Arabic Language Centre in 1980, which still operates within the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Keeping the legacy alive: The family's role
Maliha Wehbe's legacy did not fade away after her passing. Her son and granddaughter are committed to ensuring that the ALC not only survives but thrives. Kate, a British national, stated:
"Today, we strive to honor my grandmother's vision by preserving her innovative teaching methods while adapting to the demands of the modern world."
At the heart of education: Simplicity and logic
The cornerstone of Maliha Wehbe's educational philosophy was simplicity and logic. She took four years to develop her curriculum, which remains influential at the ALC. The institution uses its self-developed educational materials, such as the "Business and Social Arabic" series and the "Arabic Alphabet Guide". These tools help students acquire the Arabic language easily, with a particular focus on the spoken forms of the Levantine dialect.
The ALC is not just a language school; it is a community that has welcomed more than 7,000 students since 1980. The uniqueness of the institution lies in providing students with confident Arabic language skills, from the starting level, whether for business or social contexts.
