Judge's Unforgettable Gesture: Humanity Above Law

A Human Gesture That Touched the Entire UAE: A Judge Waived the Visa Violation Fine
In the UAE, the law is strict, but humanity never fades away behind it – this is proven by a story that recently made headlines, praised by the UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan himself. A Pakistani man did not renew his own, his wife's, and their four children's residency visas for five years, resulting in a 60,000 dirham fine. However, the case took an unexpected turn.
The man explained the situation before the Umm Al Quwain Federal First Instance Court: over the past years, he dedicated all his time and energy to caring for an Emirati sponsor who was battling cancer. He completely forgot about his own personal matters, including renewing the visas.
A special moment occurred during the hearing when Judge Hamid Al Ali asked the man's young son, who was standing beside his father in a kandura, the traditional white robe, what his name was. The boy softly replied, "Zayed." This name carries particularly strong symbolism in the UAE, as it is also the name of the country's founding father. The judge was moved, took off the UAE flag-colored scarf from his shoulders, and placed it on the boy's shoulder. Then he said, "Zayed does not get punished. Zayed receives respect." He then officially annulled the fine.
The incident coincided with Zayed Humanitarian Work Day, celebrated annually in the UAE to honor the founding father's legacy, emphasizing the importance of humanity, kindness, and community solidarity. This story serves as an example throughout the country that alongside laws, there is always room for heart and understanding.
Why is this story important?
The UAE sets an example in many areas in the Middle East, but its true greatness is shown when not only laws but values guide it. The judge's decision conveys the message that humanity can sometimes override the rules, and a sense of community responsibility can come to the forefront even in the most stringent moments.
