How to Avoid E-Scooter Fire Incidents

4 Tips to Prevent Your E-Scooter from Catching Fire
In the United Arab Emirates, especially in Dubai, electric scooters are becoming increasingly popular among those seeking fast and sustainable transportation options. However, this convenient and green solution can also pose dangers if not used properly. Last year, 254 accidents involving bicycles and e-scooters occurred in Dubai, resulting in 10 fatalities and 259 injuries, including severe, medium, and minor cases.
The most alarming phenomenon is the unexpected ignition of electric scooters, which has been reported in several countries and has alarmed authorities in the UAE as well. The Abu Dhabi civil defense authority has issued a video warning showing an explosive fire caused by a scooter. The accompanying official expert shared four key pieces of advice to help prevent similar incidents.
1. Use only original or manufacturer-approved chargers
Improper chargers, especially cheap ones from unverified sources, pose significant risks. These chargers do not provide stable voltage, which can lead to the overheating and ignition of lithium-ion batteries. Always ensure that the charger used with your device meets the manufacturer's specifications.
2. Charge in a well-ventilated area, away from flammable materials
Avoid charging the electric scooter in enclosed spaces, such as cupboards or poorly ventilated corridors. Batteries generate heat during operation, and if this cannot dissipate, it can lead to overheating and possibly fire. Also, never place the scooter near flammable materials like curtains, papers, or textiles.
3. Never leave it unattended while charging
One of the most common mistakes is leaving the charging e-scooter unattended overnight or for extended periods. A sudden malfunction or overheating can quickly cause a fire incident, and if no one is around, the damage can be significantly greater. Always monitor the charge, and if possible, do not leave the device unattended.
4. Do not overcharge: disconnect the charger as soon as it reaches full charge
Overcharging damages the battery and can reduce its lifespan in the long run. More dangerously, certain batteries can overheat if they remain powered after 100% charge. Use a charger with a timer or set a reminder to disconnect it in time.
Increasing regulatory demand in the UAE
Recently, experts have called for stricter regulations on electric scooters. A federal-level body has been suggested to oversee transportation safety issues related to e-scooters and other "soft mobility" devices. This is timely, as the number of accidents is rising alongside their growing popularity.
Last year in Dubai, 254 accidents related to scooters and bicycles were registered. Among these, 17 were severe, 133 medium, and 109 involved minor injuries. Due to the potential fire hazard of e-scooters, their use was temporarily banned in the Dubai Metro area last year.
Summary
Electric scooters provide an excellent alternative for urban transportation, but they are only safe if used conscientiously and with caution. Simple precautionary measures – such as proper charger usage, ventilated environments, supervision while charging, and avoiding overcharging – not only extend the device's lifespan but can also save lives.
