Free Autonomous Taxis Revolutionize Abu Dhabi Transit

Free Self-Driving Taxis to Zayed International Airport Now Available from Saadiyat and Yas Island
Abu Dhabi's transportation system has reached another milestone: passengers can now reach Zayed International Airport from Saadiyat and Yas Island using a driverless, fully autonomous taxi, and for now, it's completely free.
Smart, Sustainable Transportation in Practice
This step is part of the capital's intelligent and sustainable transportation strategy, which began in 2021, initially only on routes within Yas Island and Saadiyat. Since then, the service has completed over 30,000 trips, covering 430,000 kilometers without a single accident. This expansion allows passengers to create a direct connection between the airport and major city points, while experiencing an innovative, safe, and eco-friendly mode of transportation.
The Technology Behind It
The vehicles operate on level 4 autonomy, meaning they are fully self-driving, though a safety operator is present in the cabin during the trial period. The vehicles are equipped with the latest sensors: LiDAR, radar, GPS, and high-resolution cameras ensure the system receives a 360-degree view of its surroundings. Additionally, the cars are connected to a real-time monitoring system that continuously checks operation.
Safety plays a critical role, with operations governed by strict protocols that include cybersecurity, digital infrastructure readiness, and regulatory compliance.
How Does the Service Work?
The current fleet consists of 18 vehicles operating in designated areas of the capital: Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and now Zayed International Airport. Passengers can book rides through the Txai mobile app, which shows the vehicles' location and estimated arrival time in real-time.
What is the User Experience?
Initial feedback is extremely positive. Passengers highlight the seamless, modern, and safe travel experience, which is almost indistinguishable from traditional taxi rides, except for the fact that the driver isn’t operating the car. Many describe the experience as 'surprisingly natural,' despite being a technologically revolutionary solution.
What Does the Future Hold?
Further developments are expected in the near future: vehicles may expand with V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication, enabling dynamic traffic interactions. Moreover, the service plans to extend into more densely populated urban zones. The aim is to establish an integrated transportation ecosystem that connects seamlessly with other forms of public transit.
Summary
Abu Dhabi has taken another step toward making the future of transportation not just a futuristic vision but part of everyday life. The self-driving taxis have now arrived at the airport and can be tried for free—a truly innovative opportunity. For those who have previously only seen autonomous vehicles in movies or news, now is the chance to see how this technology works in reality—safely, quietly, and completely independently.
