Etihad Rail: A Sustainable Travel Revolution

Etihad Rail: Temporary Road Closures in Sharjah and Long-Term Benefits for Travelers
One of the UAE's most ambitious transportation developments, the construction of the Etihad Rail railway has entered a new phase. As part of this, Sharjah will temporarily close the connecting roads between Mleiha Road and Sharjah Ring Road from July 1 to August 30. While this step will cause short-term disruptions for motorists, forcing many onto longer, toll routes, in the long run, the project could make travel between emirates simpler, faster, and more sustainable.
What Does This Mean for Commuters Now?
The closure represents a significant change for travelers who use Mleiha Road daily. Due to traffic redirections, many are forced to take longer routes, and the alternative routes pass through Dubai's Salik toll gates, increasing costs.
Many affected individuals reported that their travel time is extended by up to 1-2 hours daily, and their monthly fuel and toll costs have increased by several hundred dirhams. Instead of previously free or shorter routes, the journey now goes through the Dubai Salik system, which is especially burdensome for those commuting from other emirates like Fujairah to Sharjah for study or work.
Current Challenge, Future Opportunity
Despite the frustrating current traffic situation for many, there is optimism for the future. The Etihad Rail network offers a genuine alternative to car travel. Trains intended for passenger traffic are expected to launch in 2026, connecting 11 cities and regions within the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates.
Among the announced stations are Sharjah University City and Fujairah Sakamkam, which could bring significant convenience for residents and students there. The new railway will also offer comfort services: air-conditioned cars, free Wi-Fi, and charging stations, making travel particularly attractive to the younger generation and daily commuters.
Salik Fees and Travel Costs
Those traveling on alternative routes need to consider the costs of the Dubai Salik toll system, one of the most modern automatic toll systems in the region. Since bypassing the closed section is practically only possible through this, many drivers incur additional costs during this period. Estimates suggest that regular commuters may face additional expenses of up to 500–600 dirhams monthly.
Long-Term Gains
One of the most important advantages of Etihad Rail will be the reduction in travel time, especially for journeys between more distant emirates. Travel between Abu Dhabi and Sharjah or Fujairah and Sharjah could be shortened by hours, while travelers can relax, study, or work on the train, making more efficient use of travel time.
The project is also beneficial from an environmental perspective: reducing car traffic contributes to decreasing air pollution and noise pollution. Freight trains, already active as part of the national rail network, significantly ease the transportation of goods and reduce road freight traffic.
Summary
While the road closures experienced in the summer pose a significant challenge for those commuting in Sharjah, the Etihad Rail project is an infrastructure development that could enhance the mobility and quality of life across the entire country. Travel habits are changing, but in return, travelers across the UAE can look forward to a faster, more convenient, and greener future.
