Dubai's New Road and Parking Fee System
Changes in Salik Road Fees: What to Expect for Drivers in Dubai?
In 2025, significant changes are expected in Dubai's transportation system as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) introduces a new "dynamic" toll and parking system. The changes in Salik toll fees and parking fees during peak hours could affect many people's daily routines, while the city aims to manage traffic more efficiently. This will be the first time that price increases occur within the Salik system, introduced in 2007, during peak periods.
Changes in Salik Toll Fees: The Details
The new Salik toll fee rules will take effect at the end of January 2025 and are as follows:
Peak Periods (weekdays):
a, Morning peak: 6:00 AM–10:00 AM
b, Afternoon peak: 4:00 PM–8:00 PM
New rate: 6 AED (2 AED increase)
Off-Peak Periods (weekdays):
10:00 AM–4:00 PM and 8:00 PM–1:00 AM: 4 AED (unchanged)
Night Period:
1:00 AM–6:00 AM: Free
Sunday:
All day: 4 AED
Night 1:00 AM–6:00 AM: Free
The aim of these changes is to balance traffic flow and reduce congestion during peak periods. The RTA hopes that the new system will encourage motorists to travel during less busy times.
Changes in Parking Fees
By the end of March, paid parking fees will also be modified:
Peak Periods:
a, Morning peak: 8:00 AM–10:00 AM
b, Afternoon peak: 4:00 PM–8:00 PM
Premium parking spaces: 6 AED/hour
Standard parking spaces: 4 AED/hour
Off-Peak Periods:
10:00 AM–4:00 PM and 8:00 PM–10:00 PM: charges unchanged
Nighttime Parking:
10:00 PM–8:00 AM: Free
Sundays and Public Holidays:
All day: Free
The new tariffs in some areas, such as around the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), may also include unique, event-based pricing.
How are Drivers Reacting to the Changes?
The introduction of the new system may require significant changes from drivers living in Dubai. For some, this means:
a, Starting their workday earlier: Many plan to take advantage of the free period from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM.
b, Timing their travel later: Others prefer to travel outside peak periods to avoid higher costs.
c, Carpooling or public transportation: Increasing numbers are considering shared car use or public transport.
d, More employers might provide support: Employees are expected to request higher transport allowances to cover increased costs.
Expert Opinion
A transport expert suggests that the changes are particularly beneficial for those working night or early shifts, as these periods are more favorable traffic-wise.
What Can We Do to Adapt?
To prepare for the new system, consider the following:
1. Plan your route: Try to avoid peak periods whenever possible.
2. Consider public transportation: The RTA's advanced metro and bus network can be a convenient alternative.
3. Carpooling: Share travel costs with colleagues or friends.
The goal of the new pricing system is to balance traffic flow and urban infrastructure load, although it requires residents to adapt and plan carefully. The RTA's measures could contribute to developing a more efficient and sustainable transportation system in Dubai in the long run.
